funny how one sees things relevant to the US in the british press that never make it to our papers.

I heard on KNX News Radio that: GM's sales were down 24%, Ford's was down 19% and SUV sales were down over 50% since the first of this year. On the flip side, bicycle sales were in excess of 19 million units which was more that the total auto sales up to this point in 2005. I can only guesstimate the causation. Me, I love to ride my bike.

Along with the increase in sales in the 1970s, bike theft inceased right along with it, too. I see another major headache for the newbie cyclist as well as the seasoned ones in the near future if not already.

I would hope that "the information age" would help with that, with good sites like BF easily mined for info. However, the reality is that no0bs are no0bish. Even seasoned commuters I've met admit to never going online for bike info, so I have to agree with ff. (It shouldn't affect us much in NYC, though, as we already have high bike and mass transit use.)

I'll be perfectly honest - I hope gas prices miraculously drop well below $2/gallon. There would be SO many sweet bikes up for sale as people go back to their cars. It takes a special breed to make cycling a lifestyle, and I don't think most folks have the mettle. I'm not even sure I do - that bus looks awfully appealing now that the temperature is dropping...

I do agree on the car stats though. The big four are hurting.
