Bicycle Mechanics - Front shock rebound adjustment.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
My Gemini 1000 has the RockShox Psylo Tulio fitted. Right hand side has the red cap for setting rebound. Roughly speaking, it has an adjustable range of about 3.40 to 4.20 if I use a clock analogy. If I set the adjustment to 3.45 the rebound is noticeably much stiffer. Any other setting from 3.50 to 4.20 and the rebound is 'normal'. That is, no matter what 'time' I set the rebound to from 3.50 there does not appear to be a gradual softening in the rebound.
Is this normal?
What I'm getting at, is if the rebound only has two effective settings (on or off) why have so many degrees of adjustment?
I have not experimented yet with different U-turn compression settings yet, but is the rebound adjustment dependent on the compression?
i have always found with RS that it is easier to find the setting you like and leave it. The varying degrees of adjustment depends on your weight as far as feel goes. However to answer you other question, no.

This may or may not help: http://www.rockshox.com/03RSProduct/03RSPsyloPage/03RSPsyloPageFlash.html
If you click on Quick Starts, it'll gives you some hints on initial set-up.

i'm not too familiar w/ the new Psylo's but i thought the red dial was just for changing travel from 3-5"? i thought the rebound dial was the tiny little black knob on the bottom of the right fork leg..near the drop out...take a look..most Rock Shox i've seen are like this...even my SID:beer:

No. They should operate separately.

Nope! Mine has the yellow/orange U-Turn on the left, and red rebound on the right. There is nothing on the bottom by the dropouts. The Psylo I have does not use conventional dropouts. It's the one with the Tulio through-axle (thru-axle for the US folk:)).
I tried the rebound adjustment again last night after a ride. It definitely seems to have two settings, either on, or off. From what I can see and feel, the variable adjustment after the first click does not make any visible difference that I can see, or again, can feel.
Sorry guys, I'm flogging my own post to death. I just checked the RS website. The shocks I have are the 2002 model. RS show conventional dropouts and possibly the rebound adjustment on the bottom of the left leg for the 2003 model.
Oh no it bloody well ain't. I went for a ride this evening and got home and decided to clean the forks. I noticed a plastic cap at the bottom of the right (rebound adjusting) fork. It came off and revealed the black adjusting knob. Above it was a protective tape. I removed that, and that revealed a sticker showing, voila, a tortoise, and what looks like a hare. That shows the direction to turn the knob to set the rebound speed. I played with it as it was set on maximum hare. As I increased the damping, so I noticed the top red knob on the right fork also showed some response, where previously there was none.
I now think I have this adjustment thing cracked. All the time it was there but covered in factory seals that the lbs should have removed when I took it.:)

:)...that was quite an adventure. I am surprised the manual didn't say something to that affect :)

Manual? What manual? It came with a warranty book written in about 90 languages, but not one page is dedicated to adjustment, being filled with the usual legalise that RS s damage if you decide to try a big-hit from 20m.:)
Anything I picked up about the shock was here, or from reviews I read on the net.
It seems you can make these adjustments whilst riding. I'd actually like to see someone, exercise a jump and then in mid-air realise the rebound is not set correctly. No problem, I have plenty of time, I'll dismount in mid-air, climb under the shock, set the rebound, climb back on the bike, reach down change the setting of the dial at the top of the shock and do that before landing.:D

That would be funny. I think I read somewhere that they plan on putting a remote adjust on the bars. Who knows. Either way I think it is the type of adjustment you set and leave. How does it feel now that you have played with it?
So far, I've done no more than tweak it to get a feel for it in a static, non-riding assessment. Tomorrow, I'm going to do a bit more. There is a bridleway I like to sprint on, so I'll set it firm at both ends to get close to a rigid set up. Then, I've found a really nice woodland track, so I'll experiment with a bit of bounce but not so much to make me sea sick on the climb back up. At least now, I feel far more confident about what I ride on. I really thought that I could not do much with the rebound, thinking it was an all or nothing approach.

Sure Bokkie.... sounds nuts... doesn't it...?
Just as nuts as Tony Hawk 20 years ago,.... "Ok, so what Im going to do is go into the half pipe, skate real hard fly into the air do twists and sommersaults and skate away....."
I was just watchig the dirt big air on the X-Games.
I swear this kid did an oil & lube on his bike, mid air... or at least change the air filter.... then landed no hands, feet over the bars..
