About 1 mile into our ride we encountered the mother of all hills! It was so steep, that it caught me off gaurd in the wrong gear and I sort of balanced in one spot for a second trying to downshift but actually had the leg strength to pull on over the hill. Is this common on a Shimano HG72 chain, or did someone set the pin poorly on installation?

It is amazing that the chain blew out before my knee.
Aviod mashing while shifting and all will be well with any chain.
Think of it as a lesson well learned. you could have broke the chain clean in half and be in the hospital right now.
Buy a HG pin and repair it.
I have witnessed and experienced this to be common with shimaNO chains. I have not however experienced this with SRAM or KMC chains, I also have not heard of this with Wipperman, or Rohloff either.

I read a few months ago that the only known chain failure in a major pro race was the Shimano chain on Julio Perez' bike when he was way out front and looked to be on his way to winning a stage in the 2001 Giro. My LBS actually removes factory chains from most bikes and puts on SRAM before letting the bike out of the shop. I'll stick with SRAM.
