Mountain Biking - How much is my bike worth and would anybody want it?

The local bike shop worker has his personal bike that's nearly brand new on sale for an incredible deal so he can get a single-speed. I'd love to get it, but can't unless I were to sell mine. So, I was just curious as to if I could sell it, and how much it would be worth.

It is a 98 model (I think, maybe 99) Specialized HardRock A1 Comp FS, aluminum frame, rapid fire shifters, V-brakes, RockShox Indy XC fork, brand new front wheel (just got it today, still in my truck), Shimano 636 pedals, Specialized body geometry split seat, 2" riser bar with a 12 degree curve, shorty stem, ODI clamp on grips, very pretty color that's metallic blue with sea green writing. I've got about $1,000 in it.

So.....you bought it and the total price you've payed for the bike is $1,000.....or did you buy the bike and put $1,000 into it??? Sounds like a rip off....

It was bought new as a Christmas present, back when HardRock bikes came stripped with the rigid fork and stuff. It was $450 new, then I immediately added some stuff, then have added a few parts since then.

$450 bike
$200 shock
$100 pedals
$20 grips
$15 handlebar
$50 seat
$15 bar ends

So that comes up to a little less than I thought, at $835. I've been thinking I had $1,100 in it, but really that includes all my bike accessories also, like saddle bag, jerseys, shoes, etc.

Yeah I'd hesitate to call it a ripoff. By today's standards and prices, yeah, but considering when I got it, no. Back then Indy shocks were pretty common, and still considered pretty nice. I got mine for right at $200 with shipping, and that was the previous year's model, and was the cheapest good shock I could find. That was about the cheapest bike with a good aluminum frame you could get then too. I shopped around for a long time and didn't buy on impulse. There's a thread going on right now talking about a 99 Judy shock being weak, however, back then that was something to lust over. Things change alot within a few years in the bike world, it's almost as bad as computers. However, I believe that just because you buy model #1 and love it, doesn't mean it's junk and you should hate it because model #2 came out and it's nicer. There will always be something nicer. If there wasn't something new to lust over, bike manufacturers would go out of business. The 4-digit dream bikes that you guys talk about will be in the same boat as mine 4 years from now. Then, that's my cue to say duuude... you gots ripped off! ;)

Damn....you just really screwed me up in the first place.

So your bike cost 800 brand new. Considering that the bike is 5 years old and all the parks including the bike itself is outdated.

You can problably sell it for 200 if you are lucky.

I bought a Brand new 2003 Giant Yukan for $350 2 weeks ago, and i am pretty sure my Yukan has better parts than your 5 year old bike, with lifetime warrenty etc. etc.

Mine's a 99 Hardrock Comp FS with a RS Jett equipped with MRP SpeedSprings, BG Sport saddle, Avid Arch 40's, DK Iron Cross pedals, $8 comfy grips, Travel Agents, etc., etc, yadda yadda. I've more than likely got just as much money invested as you do on your rig. The main difference is that I won't sell mine, not even to get a new one. (I'll sure as heck save up though!!) Would you sell something that saved your life, gets you to work in a timely and efficient manner and is as fun to work on as it is to ride? I sure wouldn't.

Yeah I'm just going to keep it, even if I do get another one, I don't know what I was thinking. I just thought I found a good opportunity to buy another one and was wondering if it's possible to sell mine to raise some cash before it's too outdated. However, I realized that it's worth alot more in my eyes than to other people. I wanted a 9-speed cassette so I'd have a lower granny gear, but since I've learned better riding techniques and got stronger, I don't need that low gearing. I wanted the disc brakes, but ever since I test drove one with the same setup, I realized that my V-brakes actually had more power. The biggest thing is the sentimental value I guess. I've had it for so long that I couldn't just let it go for some dinky amount of money like $200, and plus it was a Christmas present. I don't see how a nice aluminum frame by itself could be worth any less than that. Really, in my opinion, the only thing outdated on the bike is the RockShox Indy XC fork. Even then, everybody says how weak it is, yet I've ridden it for 5 years and wrecked it all kinds of times and it still does great. Those psylo's sure are awesome though. Maybe I could find a newer but slightly used fork with alot more travel and I'd probably be happier than dumping my whole bike to get this other one.

I have a trek 730 and I paid 200$ for it I just wanted to no how much it was worth when it was brand new years ago? By the way I ride everyday miles and miles I have no car so thats my transpertation and I love the bike its nice and light and I can fly with it, I have NO complants with it. So does anyone no?
