Mountain Biking - Woohoo, finally received my new wheelset!

Well after debating for a couple of months on which wheelset to go with I finally broke down and ordered a set last week. I went with the American Classic Disc 350. I was after a light weight wheelset that will primarily be used for race days only with an occasional ride to get used to them along with the tires that I will be using. The claimed weight is 1503 grams. It sounded to good to be true but I decided to take a chance. When I picked them up at the shop today I couldn't believe how light they were, I couldn't wait to get them home and actually put them on a scale. Believe it or not they are actually lighter than the claimed weight. Actual weight is 1493 grams! I can't wait to try these things out. My current wheelset is light but these are around 1/2 pound lighter! Once I install the Stan's strips and mount the Tioga Red Phoenix 1.9's (which weigh 440 grams each) I will lose over 1 pound of rotating weight. I should definately notice the difference. Oh yeah, the chrome skewers that came with the wheelset weigh 103 grams. Not too shabby but I may end up replacing them with my ti skewers that weigh 84 grams.

Very nice - can't make out the hubs. What kind are they?

The hubs are American Classic as well.

What bike are they for?

Primarily for the Enlightenment but I will probably swap them over to the Truth for a couple of races as well including 24 hour races.

I've never heard of American Classic parts, whats their reputation like?

I have been using american classic products for a couple of years now and have been very pleased with them. I have am classic hubs on my roadie and bottle cages. I also have one of their steel bottom brackets for my roadie that weighs less than both the FSA titanium and the race face titanium I had previously. I am also using one of their bottom brackets on my hardtail. They are extremely light with replacable bearings. Their customer service is also top notch.

i just picked up a pair of these. probably won't get em for a week or so. I should get to ride them a bit before next season, depending on the weather. I will let you know how they hold up to some (xc) abuse.

I am upgrading to discs on my ''racebike'' and I hope these wheels will fit the bill. pretty much the same weight as my old crossmax sl rim brake wheels. I hope they are as tough.

Congratulations, be sure to post a ride report once you get to ride them. I've got mine mounted on the bike, they are extremely light and look great. Unfortunately that is about all I can say about them so far. If I get a nice day I'll take them out, if not I'll wait for next season.

As of right now I will probably be spending the majority of my time off road on my fully. I've put some XT / 717's with Panaracer Fire Mud Pro 1.8's mounted to them. I don't really want to put my hardtail thru much winter type riding.

I'll also be doing quite a bit of road riding getting ready for next season. I even ordered a new roadie today so that I can put my IF up for the Winter. That bike's too expensive to be taking out in the rain, sleet and salt. I would rather ride a "cheapy" on the bad days, also be nice to use on the trainer.

I've had a set of these since March, and I've been really impressed. They're the wheels I use for every ride, and I've taken them on reasonably nasty southern AZ rocky stuff (well nasty for me), trying to keep up with my friends on *much* burlier bikes.

I had one issue where the piece of the axle that fits into the dropout on the rear wheel broke. It seemed to be a manufacturing defect or something, tho. I had not done anything in the recent past that could have caused that, and apparently it's not really where the axle should fail anyway.

Anyhow, AC's customer service was excellent. They sent a replacement part to my bike shop next day air no questions asked, and I was back on the bike the next day!

I agree. I use a fixed gear bike in the winter on the roads.
There is no way your IF should be exposed to harsh conditions.
What is your 'cheap' road bike?

Thanks for the report foresthill. I occasionally ride with someone who has a pair of the rim brake wheels and gives them high marks for durability (for a 1500g wheel) as well.

I went with the KHS Flite 350. (http://www.khsbicycles.com/07_flite_350.htm) It's nothing special but will definately do the job. The only thing I really don't like about it is that it has a triple crankset on it. I may replace that with a cheap double crankset. I will probably replace the wheelset with a set of hugi 240 hubs laced to Sun rims that I have laying around. I'll also replace the stem with a carbon stem that I have laying around. After those minor changes it should make a great bike to get me thru winter and sessions on the trainer.

Seriously though, I'm not sure if I will even bother replacing it. I may just adjust it so that I cannot go to the granny ring. If I decide that I like the bike I may put a cheap crankset on it later. It's just going to be a beater so I don't want to put much money in it. Oh yeah, the website has a misprint, it is 27 speed, not 24.
