I need to go see it. The show was pretty good. My wife and I enjoyed it very much. Hmm, have to ask if she's seen the movie. She was planning on going last Saturday.

I don't watch tv, so had no experience with the Firefly tv show. Is Firefly the type of ship that they are in?

I liked the movie, my wife hated it. She thought the main characters were a bunch of ignorant rednecks... I thought that they were people who have fought to survive for most of their lives and hence are staight talkers and doers. Which of us were more accurate (for those who watched the tv show).

I liked the grittiness and lack of moral certainty of the characters and situations. They were not so lofty as Captain Kirk or Luke Skywalker. I even liked that their ship was junky but always got them through...

yes, you are right. go rent the dvd and see the series, some episodes were as good or better than the movie in terms of story line. Being half chinese I also liked how they broke out into mandarin here and there (although the accents were bad). Apparently this postapocolyptic era was one where US and China were the two remaining superpowers.

The DVD also has an unaired episode that explains the begiinning of the characters joining and the how Mal came about the ship and why he is the person he is.
It looks to me that the Chinese became the industry power and the west remained the military power as all the advertising is in Chinese(Looks like Chinese to me) even the ads on Janes shirts are like that. But all the military are western looking.
If all you see is dumb redneck you are looking at the surface. We get that a lot around here.

my tv doesn't work (no cable and no reception.) so my husband were exposed through the dvd given to us by my sister. I'm glad because the unaired episodes were great!

I'd say your wife is 'Alliance' and you're a 'Brown Coat'.

I liked the film. I thought it had a good, well executed storyline. I've been a fan of Joss Wheadon's work ever since BtVS. I've always enjoyed how Joss can so easily marry disparate cultural traits in the worlds he creates. And he does so without apology or sophomoric explanation. In example, the prevalence of Mandarin, the use of revolvers, the evolution of gramatical norms -- these are all presented to the viewer as facts and he doesn't go out of his way to justify them. Knowing Joss' work, the reasons are sound, but he leaves it to the viewer to make the deduction. He treats his audiences with respect.

I can see where some viewers may have struggled if they have not seen the short-lived television series. I can only echo previous thoughts: view the DVDs. It is good entertainment. I'm still disappointed the network never gave it a fair shot.

I think the movie did a good job to fill-in those that did not watch the TV series. I like that it answered the questions I had about the series.
