I'm looking for a great winter work out to keep me in shape. I'm very new to cycling (2months). My past sport activities have been football and lacrosse. I picked up cycling a couple of months ago and am looking to keep active and concentrate on a lower body work out and cardio work out suited for cycling. I live in a very hilly area (and snowy - Syracuse NY), and interested in finding a workout to boost cardio endurance as well as leg strength endurance for climbs. Can anyone help?

IMO, there is nothing like cycling except cycling. But what I did during the winter last year was:

1. spin class. A lot of fun, a good workout, and you can work on your spinning skills some. It's
still not really biking, but close.
2. lift weights. In particular, I try to work on core (squats, deadlifts) as well as leg strength (leg
presses, leg curls, leg extensions)
3. xc ski. great fun and exercise.
4. Pray for Spring.

Not sure about the other stuff, but the prayers did work eventually.

Thanks,

I will locate a spin class. I also am incorporating leg exercises such as squats, extensions, lunges and of course running (tread mill hill intervals) . Thank you for the reply

The big problem is the lack of daylight here. Difficult (actually impossible) to get the riding time in.

Grrrrr....

Get some snowshoes and get out and hike. Day or night it is all fun. Try moonlight hikes. Adirondack mountain club should be very active in your area.
