Well, "ever" is a long time, but the rap thread and the metal song thread got me thinking. Picking the best from an entire genre is never easy. If you have to go to four or five that's cool too. Before I vote for mine, I'm interested in yours. Fire away!

More Blues than Jazz to me. I know they "used" to be interchangeable...but not really anymore.

With "modern" Jazz I'd have to go with "Cross Currents" by Eliane Elias for one. Was into modern Jazz for a "phase" some years back, but haven't really been into it for a while, so I don't know if I'm qualified. But other artists I remember really liking: Spyro Gyra, Fatburger, Sade (though not "pure" Jazz....a little too mainstream), Al DiMeola, Ramsey Lewis (was AWESOME in concert).

The desert islands are already here..... Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme.

How about something from the last decade or so? Can I throw Medeski Martin & Wood's "Combustication" or "Tonic" into the mix here?

Or Kenny G's Songbird? (JUST KIDDING!!!!)

Gorelick's not jazz, but he has his place.

On a desert island, you can use Songbird for tinder.

Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus

Charles Mingus - Pithecanthropus Erectus

Eddie Harris - Plug Me In

Ok, maybe not the best three ever recorded, but they're three of my favorites. :)
