Training & Nutrition - How much does one days gluttony set you back?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
If you have a few too many beers, or cookies, or whatever? Do you guys notice a training or weight difference? I would assume most of us here are pretty careful about what we eat, but we all have those days.

nothing i eat or drink stays with me for longer than a day. so, if i had a bunch of crappy food or a lot to drink i wouldn't be able to workout very hard on that day, but the next day i should be fine. so, it doesn't really affect ME in the long run. i have a very high metbolism to begin with and cycling increases it even more.
i do notice a drop in performance if a few days or a week of bad eating catches up with me. like these past few weeks (with the change into fall) i haven't been eating great. and yeah, it's dropped my performance quite a bit.

I notice it the next day. If I've had too much sugar or sodium, I wake up feeling like I have a hangover. My workouts feel clunky for about four days and then suddenly I have a burst of energy on the fifth day, so for me it seems to take that long to get the stuff out of my system. Also, during that time I have intense cravings for bad foods, so I have to be extra mindful.

When touring I will eat anything and everything I can get my hands on and it doesn't bother me a bit. In fact not eating like a pig makes me feel weak the next morning. I've been known to ride 20 miles out of my way to follow a whiff of suspected chocolate chip cookies.
I notice a gluttony lag of 3 or 4 days. The day or so after I feel fine, but later in the week the weight and lethargy show up.

Aside of an extra 10 minutes for a BM, one day of gluttony has little effect if any, especially for an active cyclist.
At least once or twice a week, I become pig like and indulge my suppressed urges. I've lost over 40 pounds since May and, to be honest, this is a key to success for me. I just would go crazy if my whole life was one of denial. The next day, I hit the weights and go out for a ride again and feel somehow rejuvinated to keep on pushing. I am at a point now, where the binging is going to slow down and the day to day more normalized eating is going to take over. In other words, I want to eat sensibly so that I don't gain weight again. I'm convinced that exercise is my long term key, though.

Bad assumption if you ask me. I'm not terribly careful, but nor am I careless about what I eat. I try to stay in tune with my body and feed it what I think it needs. Sometimes it needs a few too many beers or cookies. Sometimes it needs a nice big salad. I notice differences in training, but I can't attribute them to diet specifically. Weight has stabilized. My personal theory is that the stress of worrying about things like this does more damage than the actual effect of things like this.

I'm generally pretty strict about what I eat (not really for health reasons, I just don't like a lot of unhealthy foods. Lucky me!), but occasionally I've been known to knock back a few too many, or take a firm hold of the brownie tray at a party. Generally, that'll put me out of riding commission for about 4 hours for the brownies, 12 for the sauce, and then I'll feel fine.
the only rule here is to make damn sure that you drink a really good single-malt scotch(islays are best). then have a glass of water. the next morning start with a warm-up that is equal to about 10% of what you plan to ride in total. you'll be fine, I find it to be a more holistic approach to life and cycling.
also, if you're going to worry about gluttony as something that'll set back your cycling, you might want to consider the other six deadly sins as well. just a refresher:
pride
envy
gluttony
lust
anger
greed
sloth
sounds like ya'll got some work to do.

After last week's cnetury I was consantly eating. After the ride, I stuffed 10 garlic bread rolls in my mouth, then I had the barbicue lunch, then cleaned up, got dressed and ate a BK chicken sandwich. This trend continued for the next 2 -3 days.
Weight went up a tadd initially but after this weekend's ride it's bakc to where it was?

I hardly ever eat things such as pizza , BK, fried foods etc. However when i do it passes through me in an hour or so and i feel terrible for the rest of the day. I believe this is because my body has become used to my diet of healthy things. Does anyone else experience this?

Yes, If I eat something such as a fast food cheese burger I feel like crap for the rest of the day. I have stoped eating fast food. I also believe that it is because my body is used to eating healthy things, and it is easier for my body to notice if I eat something that is not good.

yeah, that seems to be the case with me too. the better i eat the more sensitive i am to bad food.
I can eat junk food on days I train and not get fazed. Another thing is that I get pumped up about riding or getting in shape when i drink. Riding a little buzzed is fun. Although you can't push yourself really hard.
I once drank 3 beers and got pumped up about losing weight, I decided to run 3 miles. HAHA. Yeah right. I ran half a mile and said F it and went back for another beer.

I eat a very low fat diet and when I endulge in the evil foods I don't have a gain at the scales but I feel horrible and my stomach does the tango, so I try to avoid the bad stuff all together.
