Mountain Biking - Talk me out of a 2005 Coiler

The shop I used to work at offered me a 17" 2005 Coiler, brand new, $1199 out the door. I am drooling at the thought of 6" travel and bombing off staircases. However, this poses a problem because I don't currently have an XC bike and was planning on getting one soon which I wouldn't be able to do if I got the Coiler. So convince me I need an XC bike and the Coiler is far too bulky for XC use :D

Buy it and a xc bike.

Use the money you 'saved ' :) on the coiler to help you buy another bike.

1199 dollars... OK, you get the money, walk to the shop, ride out with a Coiler. Seriously, you can't pass that offer up, here a Coiler is about 2000 euros...

the more i see people on the trail riding coilers the more i want one. it looks like such a fun bike to ride. who cares if it's not really that good for xc... i'd ride it for that regardless. heck, mark weir rides his vp-free like a cross country bike for winter training.

dude, why would you want an xc bike over a coiler. i would jump on that deal. life is short. but it isnt that short.

unless you're racing or a weight-weenie or doing MAJOR climbs, the Coiler can be ridden for XC and be just plain LOTS of fun...

and since you're thinking about the bike, odds are the few percent slower you are is more than made up by the fun and durability factor!!

i ride a 2004 Coiler for almost everything - in the park, XC trails and all sorts of Freeride (yesterday was an aewsome tour with a total of 5000ft uphil (1 hour riding, 1/2 hour pushing and 1.5 hours carrying the bike over my head on my backpack)... yeah with 37.5lbs with DH tires i'm slow on the road and on climbs, BUT who the heck cares b/c i get to the top and then it ROCKS!!

my XC bike ('02 Specialized FSR Stumpjumper) hardly every gets used any more as i almost *always* find an excuse to ride the Coiler (i basically only ride the Stumpy if i know the trails i will be riding are too easy and then absolutely no challenge on the Coiler)

um... don't know what you like to ride, but if it's technical stuff i don't think you'll be disappointed with the Coiler over a lighter XC bike (if it bothers you when someone passes you uphill then forget it!)

ah... i remember not so long ago when i was faced with the same dilemma... no-one bothered to talk me out of it either. :p I even bought it w/o test riding *gasp* (shock, horror) - though my faith was not misplaced.

get it, especially since its at that price (goddam! that's 40% off retail??!?? sorry just noticed) Though not thouroughly xc, it's good for "all-mtn" duty so long as you don't race/mind the weight.

Well I'm still debating. They also have a Trance 4 they'd sell me for $899... basically I'd throw all my XT/LX/XTR stuff on the Trance w/ some DT Onyx/Mavic 317s I have lying around and have a pretty solid Propedal 4.2" bike for $899, plus be able to sell the Deore stuff it comes with. decisions, decisions. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE a Coiler, but I do have a P.1 that handles my freeride needs pretty well... I'm much more into urban than I am extreme freeriding. I am by no means a racer, but I do enjoy hills, so I'm leaning a little towards the Trance as its more of a all-mountain bike than the Coiler.

Here's an idea, buy an XC bike and send me the coiler. :D
O and I know a rider who lives around me who owns a coiler. He bought it as an XC bike but then got into DH and stuff; and BTW, he uses clipless pedals on it too. :p
