has anyone had any experience with buying used carbon frames? i am interseted in getting a used bike and am not sure wether to look at carbon bikes or not. would it be better to ask a question like this in the mechanics forum? thanks in advance
i wouldn't buy a used carbon frame unless i knew the guy that i was getting it from. it is just too iffy because you could get one that looks perfectly fine and then it could just shatter when you land a jump or drop wrong.
I would never, ever consider buying a used carbon fiber mountain bike frame. I wouldn't even buy a used carbon fiber mountain handlebar or seatpost.
Too risky due to the 'catastrophic failure' nature of the material. And mountain bikes by nature are made to be used harshly.
What bike is it?

A used carbon road bike is one thing. With a mountain bike I think you're pushing it.

I did, I guess I won the lottery. First trail ride blew a log hop and snagged the rear wheel almost stopping myself dead.
Frame has no noticable problem, no flexing, nothing!
Maybe I'm lucky, maybe there is no reason to be overly cautious, any more so than an aluminium frame, which have a finite fatige life.
No way in hell would I consider buying a used carbon ANYTHING online
