Mountain Biking - SantaCruz Jackal
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have been looking for a new dirt jump bike, and my searching led me to find the SantaCruz Jackal. I was wondering if this bike is the right bike for me. Here is the percentage of how much of each type of biking I do:
Dirt Jumping: 30%
Is this bike well suited for that? I am looking for the best quality of dirt jump bike I can get for around $2000CAD.

try the specialized p3 (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?sid=06PSeries) ive heard good things about it, but personally i would go with the giant stp1 (http://www.giantbicycles.com/us/030.000.000/030.000.000.asp?model=11032) nad if you want you can upgrade it later on but i dont think you'll need to . i have the stp3 i just upgrade the tires and grips but cranks are on the way. believe me :D
I've looked into the P3 already, and I didn't really like it as much as the Jackal. Which do think would be best between the Jackal and the STP1 (regardless of price differences)?

i don'tt think the jackal would be good for trials at all... from what i gather from santa cruz, the jackal is heavy, and the top tube wouldn't be a help either...

I have ridden the Jackal and LOVED the geometry! It manualled really, really well and just felt so good! I have ridden one that was built up at only 30lbs! It was built up sweet with a Vanilla, Chris King, Holzfellers, Hayes mag rear, Atomlab pedals, michelin tires, easton stem and carbon bars, and *I think* some rhyno lites. It was sweet.
How would this bike rate against a Kona Cowan, and a Marin Rocky Ridge (keeping in mind how much of each riding type I do)? Also, does anyone know the approximate Canadian price for a Jackal? I can't seem to find it listed anywhere.
I think the main difference between the Jackal, the Marin Rocky Ridge and the Kona Cowan is the chainstay length.
The Jackal has 16"... The Cowan has rather longish cs at 16.75", and I believe the Marin is ~16.5". The longer stays have a nice stabilizing effect at speed, but aren't quite as nimble for doing manuals and tech stuff.
The Giant STP series all have 16" stays and the frames are very sturdy without being too heavy. I have both the STP3 and a new STP1 frame I'm building up right now. The STP3 has been an awesome street bike, and is a good jumper. (I have a 14"... my new STP1 is the large and is 1" longer, and I feel it will be a better all around bike on trails as wells as the dj and street stuff... we'll see.)
I love the Jackal, but feel the STP is a great choice for value as well as killer geometry and strength to weight ratio. (Somewhere along the line I'll proably get a Jackal, just because!)
