View Full Version : How to trust my bike again....

I have had two crashes in 4 weeks after 10 years with no crashes. I currently commute 24 km per day, or did anyway.

First one happened when trying to get up a drive to post a letter on the way home. The drive had a steep lip, and the front wheel went along the lip, I hit the ground and lost some bark. The last of the worst scab is just about gone.

One week ago I crashed again. I was taking up the lane behind a car that was turning off, we were going downhill but he slowed me down to between 20 and 30 kph. When he was gone, I stood up on the pedals to get back up to speed, the chain slipped, and down I went.

I landed on the back of my head and broke my helmet, and landed on my shoulder and fractured my collarbone. My GF says the blow to the head also appears to have given me Tourettes Syndrome. Every time I roll over she is woken by my swearing.

So I am a few to many weeks off my bike, and am not sure I will be able to regain that trust I once had in its machine like properties.

Anybody with similar experiences?

I think I will wait until that collarbone has knitted.... But I am keen to get back.

I am thinking of an overhaul. I havent pulled the forks off or the shocks apart yet, My back brake cable is fraying, so replacing all my cables seems like a good idea. I have had to buy new front v-brakes as the crash pulled the noodle out through its holder twisting it.

Maybe a rebuild will help....

Missing riding though. And nicotine cravings are strong again after 8 months without. But I am not giving in.

All machines are prone to break downs even if they're well maintained. Metal fatiques, weaknesses are exposed, etc. Rise, Rebuild and Ride.

You might be suffering from some distraction (or physical disturbance) that is causing you to make mistakes you wouldn't ordinarily make. If you solve that, or if the distraction goes away by itself, you probably won't have any additional problems. You don't trust yourself to begin riding again because your subconscious knows the problem remains.

+1

any time a machine fails me, and I lose confidence in it, I spend several hours tinkering with it. Even if I'm not making any real difference, it makes me feel like I've done my part, and now the machine should do its part. :D

I think the real question is, will your bike trust you again?
