James, have you read "One Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich"? Also by Solzhenitsin. Very powerful.
For myself, I'm reading "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen.
Actually I think I have read one day in the life of Ivan Denisovich. It was a number of years ago though.I may have read cancer ward but I am not sure.

Biking Related - I just finished Mike Magnuson's Heft on Wheels. I found it to be a interesting and fast read that kept me in the pages. I liked it because I could relate to his story quite well. I just started 23 Days in July about Lance's sixth Tour win in 2004. So far so good.
I read a lot of non-fiction to learn a lot about nothin'. I am a serious participant in anything I do. I will get every book and magazine under the sun and read every word until I have a good damn knowledge of the activity. I have done years of shooting sports, then photogography and now I'm back to biking again. Who knows what will be next time.

Can't recommend anything weird, but this is excellent:
Epictetus: A Stoic and Socratic Guide to Life (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0199268851/qid=1125416596/sr=8-6/ref=pd_bbs_6/102-0253162-8567301?v=glance&s=books&n=507846)

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The book is all things to some people, something to everyone, oddly bikish.
I'm on my crusade to read the classics.
Just finished; "The Catcher in the Rye."
Starting; "The Last of the Mohicans."
On deck; "Oliver Twist."
Avoid at all costs "Wuthering Heights." Uff. I'm glad I didn't die while reading that book. What a way to leave the world.
The Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei by John Stevens. You will feel like a pansy for ever having shirked a run, ride or workout.

Reading now: Join Me.
By Danny Something, some Brit. Tries to start a 'collective' (not a cult) by getting people to send him a passport photo, but doesn't tell them what they're joining. So far, its a Riot.
Weird 'philosophy' book: Wild Animus. They were passing it out free at the state fair last year. Its pretty damn weird. But I'll tell you why it was free: It Sucks.

Just finished "A Game of Thrones" by George RR Martin
Just started "A Clash of Kings"-the sequel. I've already read all 3 of the series, but that was 2 years ago, and I want to refresh my memory for the 4th book, that comes out in November. These are incredible works of epic fantasy, and speaking as someone who doesn't particularly care for Fantasy as a genre, this is pretty high praise. These are fairly long books, but they don't FEEL long, ya dig?

After reading about it here, I picked up a copy of Japanese Death Poems. About twenty pages in now, I am enjoying it quite a bit already.

At work today I got to really craving some new Vladimir Nabokov. I wanted something full-length (I'm already working on a book of his stories), so I picked up a copy of Pale Fire as I left the mall. About 10 pages in and I'm loving it already.

You'll have to let me know how they are. I've been curious to check 'em out. Trouble is I get impatient with most short story collections.
Just started the new Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men and have blown through half of it in like two days (I am not a very fast reader). It's sort of pulpy but he's never too lite. Check it out.

Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie
A bizarre novel, to say the least, but interesting. Am now getting to the part that earned him a death sentence.

The Long Emergency by James Howard Kunstler. Highly suggest you read this book. It's very comprehensive about the effects of Peak Oil. I'm sure many on this forum know about Peak Oil and welcome the fact that it'll greatly reduce traffic and increase bike usage - it will. But there will mostly be ill effects, and Kunstler lays them out.

There's more to it than I first imagined. Though it basically has to do with some blasphemy involving mohammed and allah.
I just finished "Into thin Air" and "Into the Wild" both by John Kraukner. I liked the latter of the two better. Anyone else read these?

Yup. Interesting reads, though both written as an attempt at catharsis / excising some personal demons. An interesting rebuttal to "into thin air" was written by anatoli something-or-other (bourchev?), a guide on one of the teams that lost people who was criticized a bit by krakauer.
One of these days we'll pick up his latest, on the LDSers, which should be interesting...

That's amazing, I just finished reading both of those back to back also.
I like them both. I read Into the Wild first, which I thought was the more insightful story. Into Thin Air was the more gripping story, and more amazing story.
I had to rent IMAX video "Everest" after reading the Into thin Air. Highly recommended, more for the extended interview with Beck then the movie itself (the movie itself had very little to do with Krauauer's expedition, although they were on the slopes at the same time).
Serious reading-
Just finished: "The Words We Live By: Annotated Guide to the Constitution" by Linda Monk and "Eats, Shoots, and Leaves" by Lynn Truss
Now reading: "Elegant Universe: Superstrings, Hidden Dimensions, and the Quest for the Ultimate Theory" by Brian Greene
On deck: "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by E. Hemmingway and "Collapse" by Jared Diamond
Pulp-
Just finished: "Illium" & "Olympos" by Dan Simmons
Now reading: "Dark Nest Trilogy" by Troy Denning (Star Wars universe)
On deck/on-going: "The Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" by Stephen Donaldson
Recommendations on request.

I haven't read yet, but the version of Into Thin Air I read had an addendum with a rebuttal to Boukreev's book.
Coehlo has a new release entitled Eleven Minutes. I'm buying it later.

Haven't read Boukreev's either but I also had the version of Into Thin Air with the rebuttal. After reading the book I did not see why Boukreev had to right his own account. I don't think Kaukner was trying to place any blame on him and after all no clients from Boukreev's team died.

I read both those years ago. Great books!
I just finished:
Formosa: Licensed Revolution and the Home Rule Movement. 1895-1945, George H. Kerr
An interesting read on Taiwan's history up to 1945. Kind of a bitter sweet history. Japan as good guy, but mostly bad guy toward their colony.
