Hi,

I am looking for a new MTB and now, the 2002 stuff is on sale. Should I buy a 2002 MTB now or do you know if the 2003 stuff is better value for money - better componentry for the dollar? I am mainly looking at Specialized, but will consider anything.

At the moment in Australia, the Specialized Rockhopper is going for AU$1150 with RRP being AU$1499. Bargain? There is one left, so I need to hurry!

If buying new, it's always best to buy at the end of the year and get the deep savings. Sure there will be some improvements on some of the 2003 equipment, but not enough to justify the price difference for most people. You get so much bang for your buck these days it's incredible. A $500 bike today was a high priced racing steed a few years ago. Got to love the trickle-down technology.

Go for the 2002. The upgrades to the 2003 most likely will not be that big of a differance.

Agreed, get the 2002, just make sure it's the right size, or it won't matter how good the deal!

I noticed you mentioned a rockhopper so this will prolyl bear no relavance to you but since you said your interested in Specialized bikes, if anyones wanting to get a bighit get a 2002 model if possible and get a great deal. The only thing the have changed in the frame from this year to next is the rear linkage allowing 8.5" of travel. BUT you can soon buy this linkage to upgrade previous bh anyway.

The new linkage may actually already be out because last i checked at the Specialized concept store near me they had one in the cabinet but no list price for it. But that was a couple months ago now so possibly its on sale.

Go for the 2003.

i don't mind paying full price than $100 off a old model.

There are reasons why they make changes to a bike every year.

also if you ever want to sell your bike for another, you will get more money for the newer model.

Its really personally preference just like cars.

Do you have to have the latest car and pay msrp. Or would you rather go for the year-end closeout deals.

To me whats the point in buying a bike that came out 1 year ago. If you are going to spend money on a NEW bike spend that little extra on a real NEW bike
