Actually it was a twist from Cannonball Run, I believe "Whatsa behind me, she's not important!", but thanks for playing. Johnny, tell him what prizes he could have won...
Close, but not quite. It's actually from Gumball Rally. Raul Julia's character snaps the rear-view mirror off the windshield of the Ferrari Daytona and tosses it into the backseat while saying "Whatsa behind me is not important."

On some posts on forums i just use dslreports spell checker. It works great best one ive found.
How's it work on punctuations?
Bad writing bothers me too, if it is a result of laziness. Sometimes the laziness occurs in the present writing. In these cases, laziness implies disrespect: "You people are not worth the bother of checking my spelling and grammar." Other times, the laziness happened long ago, when the person should have been paying attention in school but wasn't.
But sometimes, laziness is not the reason for poor writing.
In some cases, posters use English as a second language. One of my favorites is Ricardo (I can't remember his whole user name). He always says "I know my ingles sucks." But he knows more about bikes than 99 % of us know, and he actually has a charming and colorful way of writing ingles. Not only does he know a lot more about bikes than I do, his English is a lot better than my espanol.
Other posters probably have learning disabilities. I will not mention names because it might embarrass some of them. Again, some know a lot more about bikes than 99 % of us, and, to me, it's worthwhile to spend some time deciphering their posts. (Of course, intelligent people know that fluent writing is only one of many characteristics of intelligence.)
Finally, some threads are lighthearted and are happening quickly in "real time." It would just be a waste of time to proof and edit posts in those threads.
How, precisely, does one post "on" a "folder"? Don't you mean in this forum, my pedantic friend? Also, according to what definition of literacy is it considered "literate" to end a sentence with two question marks?
Yours in pedantry,
PC
This forum uses folders, a computer term and a form of classification. If you have ever looked at this website, it has several blue folders, and folders within folders. People who are computer literate, even slightly, are familiar with the term "folder" as it pertains to computers. Both Apple and Microsoft systems use folders.
And the call in the first post was for the use of most basic rules in English. As for someone being pedantic, you should look the word up before using it because you haven't a clue as to what it means.
Roody - You're thinking of Ricardo Khun. He's some sort of genius backyard engineer. And yes, his Spanglish is amusing in a colorful way. He gets his points across.

Ive been building and repairing computers for over 13 years now and been on line most of that time. This was the first time i ever heard folders used to describe a sub forum. The blue folder icon is just a theme for these boards. I could make or download a theme for xoops that would have the same sort of icons. This doesnt suddenly turn pages in to folders. A forum with in a forum is a sub forum. They can also have catagories like these forums have as well. Im sure this forums pages are stored in folders if hosted on windows or mac.
Folder? Is that using internet slang?Folders are what we used to call "directories", but they found that people had a hard time spelling "directories".

lol true
Its funny though windows calls them folders yet the command to move around them is cd (change directory) and not cf (change folder) and to list its contents dir not fol.
The only directory I am familiar with is the phone book.

I couldn't find the "tongue-in-cheek" emoticon for my first post, but your reply is SO funny in the theme of this post. :roflmao:
As a side note, the new Google toolbar has a spellcheck feature that you can use for forum posting. Just type out your message and hit the spellcheck button and you can correct your typos.

I'm well aware of the meaning of the term "folder" as it applies to file storage on computers (i.e., is used metaphorically to make file directories and subdirectories easier for non-geeks to visualize). I'm also aware that the use of little folder icons for largely the same purpose in web forum software does not make the forums themselves "folders." The OP's use of the term, combined with his use of the preposition "on" (even if they were folders, we would post in them, not on them), showed him to be computer-illiterate, at least as regards those particular terms. Ordinarily, of course, this would not be worth pointing out, except that the OP was ragging on others for being illiterate, which makes him fair game.
Moreover, as to your last point, I will simply advise you that I am rubber and you are glue--and that furthermore, everything you say bounces off of me, and sticks to you.

Hmm now thats really a well thought out and mature answer

I'm a Linux and Windows systems/network administrator for 250 users with a major telecoms company...
...thus, my superior computer skills still say that the word "folder" refers to "folding bikes"...and that the author of this thread is claiming that "everybody" who uses seat "posts" on a "folder" is illiterate.
I am therefore removing the seat "posts" on my "folder" to prove him wrong.

No damnit you got it wrong. He was singling out one specific folder and was calling every one who posts while on that folder is iliterate. But he forgot to say what one or attach a pic of it :p

Perplexing....
Thanks, Nova, for clearifying that four me.
I just wish the author of this thread would have been more specific as to which folder classifies the rider as being illiterate, so that I can:
a.) return my folder immediately to the merchant and demand for a refund "in the name of literacy".
b.) warn my other folder-riding buddies not to post if they own the folder that the author of this thread is referring to...so that they themselves do not succumb to illiteracy.
I think we should move this thread to the "Folding Bikes" section of this site and include a poll as to which "folder" when one posts on makes the owner illiterate.
For example:
Poll: Is everybody who posts on THIS folder illiterate?

[rant on] SPELL check is not GRAMMAR check. Your words need to be spelled in such a way to closely resemble the word you really meant so that the program can properly correct it. Otherwise, it will put the wrong word in it's place. But, those fabulous software engineers make it easy on you so that this does not happen. You just watch as the spell checker runs and make sure it's modifying the word correctly. If you cannot even do that, you are labeled LAZY in my mind. I might read your post, but I will do it begrudgingly.
And even with spell and grammar check, taking the time to reread an email before you send it can do wonders for making it more easily understood. Sometimes you might miss a word (something no checker will catch) or just type something that really makes no sense. Unless you are typing a book, this may add an extra 30 seconds to your posting time. Anyone who constantly posts on these forums then claims they don't have time to proofread posts is just asking to be picked on. [rant off]
Hopefully I can ignore this thread until it dies so as not to further prolong a thread that should never have been created :)
I don't use spell checkers and I don't like them. They can be useful for people who use English as a second language or generally for people who have trouble spelling. Fair enough. But for most, it is a crutch and doesn't help get the spelling right in their heads if they continue to rely on spell checkers.
The simplest and most effective thing that would probably reduce a large number of errors made simply out of laziness would be if people just took the time to re-read their posts before hitting that button.

Yeah, school was such a waste of time. Learning spelling, grammar, math, etc. Why bother, when we can bang at the keyboard and people will figure it out anyway?

The poster was refering to posts on an internet board. You have to use a keyboard to chat on this board. No one is saying school was a waste. How did math get into the discussion? I'm sure hoping you were not taking a intelligent joke, which my post was, to be serious. When you make a joke, i suggest using a better tone otherwise the humor is lost.

I find ironic humor in the above statement.
Do Aussie burgers really have eggs and beets on them?

only a burger with the lot. you pay extra for the egg but the beetroot comes standard.
Do Aussie burgers really have eggs and beets on them?
You can go to Maccas in New Zealand, and they serve a Kiwiburger. It's a Mcburger, but it's got a friggin' egg on it. I've ordered a steak, and it came with an egg on it. Kiwis will serve eggs with anything. Over here, I'm happy to remember to ask for "No tah mah toes" on my burger, only to get beetroot. Oh, you can get egg on your pizza too.
Mo: Didn't you ever go to school, stupid?
Curly: Certainly, and I come out the same way.
Autclaly the mnid is a vrey uinuqe tnihg, you can raed ervey wrod in a stnenece as lnog as the fsirt and lsat lteters are in the creort sopts basuece the mnid olny lokos at the fsirt and lsat lteerts of ecah wrod. So a lttlie mpsielnisg is no roasen to konck semonoe. Get my pnoit?
Spelling counts. It's even in the rules we all agreed to when we signed up. Just because we can read it, doesn't make it acceptable.

It sounds more like everyone that reads is correcting everbody who writes. :)

To answer the original question in this thread:
No, we are not all illiterate. But most of us are surly and cranky.
