Because of a leg problem (not pertinent to this post) I changed my SPD pedals out for flats for awhile.

Last night, after about four miles of my nightly 7 mile loop, my right foot, ankle and shin started hurting. I moved my foot forward on the pedal to where my heel was actually over the spindle. The pain eased off in a minute or two but felt awkward and unbalanced so I moved my left foot forward. Viola! My cadence picked up, the slight burning in my thighs quit and I actually rode in a higher gear for the balance of the ride.

Everything I have read or heard says that the ball of your foot needs to be over the spindle for efficient pedaling. What's with the heels giving me more power, speed and just as smooth? An aberration on this one ride only?

Sorry for the length.

Saddle height may be wrong.
