Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - maybe this is a silly question, re trackstarnyc

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

They can afford to keep prices low because real estate is very reasonable
in the east village / LES and also, it is very easy to make ends meet running a
small indie bike shop.

you think clips and straps are included too?

All this time I thought it was profiteering off people who have little to no direct access to fine NJS certified parts. Silly me. At least Business Cycles manages to get quality pictures and descriptions of their goods on their site without all of the jaded pretense that Trackstar seems to have.
Also, I do agree that Trackstar has good deals on pedals, but that's about the only thing even close to retail price.

Because I'd rather pay 265 rather than 390 for a NOS Campy Record crankset (eBay)? Where does the insanity end if I'm forced to pay nearly 4 bills on a crankset that retails for a little over $300?

I've said this before. I don't understand their ridiculous prices. expecially cranksets.
DA for $400?
sugino 75's for $190 with NO CHAINRING?
miche for $230? WTF, that's more than I would pay *in Canadian dollars* at my overpriced yuppie LBS

NJS = type-R
Oy vey. This sorta hating makes visiting this forum a mixed blessing.
If their prices bother you, shop elsewhere. Generally, I would rather ride my bike and support a small, local business (in Downtown NY, no less) that lives, supports, and breathes track/fixed, rather than nickel and dime over prices on the internet.

sure NJS is popular right now, but it so happens that NJS parts are quality parts and many quality parts, japanese ones anyways, are NJS. A big part of my bike is NJS, but that happened by circumstance, I wasn't really looking for NJS part, just the deals I got were nice parts that are stamped.
I agree that trackstar prices are high, but rent in LES is higher than most places in the country and on certain things, it comes out to be the same as if I ordered from Business cycles and paid shipping.
Don't hate so much, if you think its pricey, shop elsewhere, they never act like they are a godsend to the track communitie, they just supply because of the demand. Its a shop run by messengers and I think thats great.

Businesscycles is also taxed. I hear trackstar labor charges are reasonable, and that their work is quality.

I don't know if any of you guys have actually been to business cycles, but it's run by one dude and he's pretty nice. So if any of you get to Miami you should at least go say hi. I know that has nothing to do with prices, but it's nice to see my LBS mentioned on the internet. There's also a pretty sweet dog.
I've never been to Trackstar and don't know all that much about them (although their website is.. interesting..), but pretty much any retail business in a trendy area of Manhattan is going to charge more than the norm, in a large part because they are paying utterly ridiculous rent. If there is profiteering going on, it's on the part of the landlords.
Usually if they're nice to you and are willing to do you favors, it's the rent.
If they treat you like dirt and still charge high prices, it's them.

If they didn't alienate so many people, we custies on bikeforums and elsewhere wouldn't talk about them so much. All PR is good PR.

Is this chick on the trackstar site from bikeworks? It sure looks like her...
I like that they're owned by (not so functioning) messengers, have the balls to pay that much in rent, and are dedicated to a niche interest, but what the hell are they doing trying to sell parts so high above retail online? They might as well only accept space bucks because while someone will pay that much IN THE STORE, they are going to look elsewhere online. If I stopped in the store on vacation, I'd probably pick a couple small things up, but if I were in the market for a crankset or something larger, I'd be smart about it and use my other resources.

Maybe they are banking on the fact that messengers are too poor to have internet access? ;)

Ok... Then do it and stop whining about their high prices. Sure, they're prices on cranks
and some other stuff are a bit high, but I've found that they offer good customer service.
Plus Brad, Zach, and Alex are all competent bike mechanics and they've done good when
I have had work done there. I just don't see the point of on-line knitting circle complaining.
As said before, if you have a problem with their prices, don't shop with them. It's not that
complicated. If you don't live here in NY, then you probably don't understand that the cost
of living here is higher than most places and the cost of having a good bike shop stocked
with the parts you want/need is no different.

Ironically, most of the people posting here are indeed from NYC..
i have had only good experiences with ts. they built up my iro for me and every few months i head back for something new to add to it or adjust and often they've only charged me for parts! they are also nice and visiting the store reminds me of when i was a twelve year old comic book fanatic and i got to go to forbidden planet for my birthday--so much stuff i want to buy, its overwhelming.
FYI: I don't have to live in a city to realize the cost of living is comically high.

Or maybe because you would rather support a local business run by people who race, who sponsor local races and a track team, who sometimes show up at local races (even ones that they don't organize) with prizes for the winners, who loan bikes and parts to local messengers who have the misfortune to have their bikes stolen, who put a bench outside their shop so that you can hang out and talk to bike people, and who NEVER pressure you to buy stuff just because you walked through the door.
But I'm sure your eBay guy does a lot to support your local bike culture too...

I'm all about supporting local shops, but I guess I'd have to make a NYC wage to afford the wares they sell or live in NYC to take advantage of that pimp ass bench out front.
Out of curiosity, anyone know offhand how much Trackstar charges for wheel builds? I've got some hubs i'd like to build up...

Why are you so bothered by TS? did they force you to buy something? cuz I personally hate it when people hold a gun to my head and force me to buy over priced goods. Have you ever actually had interaction with them, or are you just basing all this on hearsay?

No I've never had any interaction with Trackstar. I'm not attacking their employees, their in-store sales methods, or the shop at all. I'm just merely pointing out that they're charging far more than retail on the internet. My $7.50/hr wage would probably be $18.00/hr in NYC, thus it'd be easier for me to swallow $400 for a crankset, but the internet is not relegated to the NYC metropolitan area, so us wage slaves in different cities still get the same price and still can't afford such prices.
I'm sure retail is way more than even Trackstar sells it.
Retail is not what you find surfing on the internet. Retail is usually 50-100% mark-up, more in some areas.
MAP (minimally advertised price) might be, but you usually can find on-line stores going below that which is supposed to be a nono.
Overhead and reputation is what you pay for places with storefronts. Sometimes thats worth more than the saving and risk of an on-line store. To each his own, and thank you to all that push the sport of biking in general further.

Track star is way above retail on almost everything they sell. I've never been there, or bought anything from them, so I can't comment on their services. If they only charge for parts when they do a repair like that one guy mentioned, then it might be worth being a regular customer there. In a way, the service is already factored into the price of what you buy. If this is not a regular occurence, then I would take my business elsewhere. As one poster said, they do seem to sell cool.
