He is also no longer the team physician for TIAA-CREF (http://www.tiaa-cref.org/cycling/staff.html) . My guess is that he and former USPS rider in the Tour in 1999 with Lance, Jonathon Vaughters, had a discussion.

I don't see any irony..this is a very predictable event. Steffen made a stupid statement in the earlier interview (http://www.velonews.com/news/fea/9005.0.html) when he said "bad guys like Armstrong dope"...he should have known that would provoke an immediate and aggressive legal response, which it obviously has. He acknowledged in the original interview that he was basing his comments on second-hand sources, and he repeated that information in his retraction, so in fact, he hasn't changed his story, just admitted that it was inappropriate to repeat second-hand allegations against a public figure. He also said in the earlier interview he would likely quit working with cycling teams due to dismay at the prevalence and institutionalization of cheating in cycling, and so he has.

The irony is who is boss was...and he has only left one team that I am aware of. The one run by Lance's former 1999 teammate...

I wonder if he thinks Vaughters is one of the "bad guys" or one of the "good guys that dope"...
