Hi all,
I just picked up an old Raleigh Super Record for a friend, serial no. N1A0958. It's in great shape, been ridden very little, but the owner did not take care of it, and much of the chrome has rusted and begun peeling in areas, esp. the fork ends, the pedals and the exposed part of the seatpost. There is also all of this slow rust on the black painted parts of the frame--sort of a veiny pattern, like little cracks of rust everywhere.
I've loosened and looked at some of the insides of the parts, and everything that has been covered is pristine, was well-greased, I guess. I think the owner went out on a few rides sometime in the 80s, got the bike a little wet in some seaside fog, then left it in his garage for years without wiping it down or washing it. My question is how to attack this rust and then treat the spots. I have some steel wool, but the chrome is peeling in areas, and I don't want to exacerbate the problem and scrape it off. Anyone out there give some good advice on maybe not restoring but at least cleaning up oxidation like this? I have Naval Jelly, but several users have told me they found it kind of useless. Any good secrets?
Also, when I've got some of the rust off, what should I treat the exposed area with to help prevent further corrosion?
Thanks for the input.
