IMO, this is potentially very bad for you and/or the dog.

Would you make your wife run beside you on a leash (vice versa)?

Would you feed your wife dog food or raw meat? Would you expect your wife to sit on the floor when you told her to? Does your wife chase squirrels? Is your wife a dog? No, then why treat your dog like your wife?

I ride with my dog all the time and it is usually the best part of my day and I know it is for him. Sometimes we use a leash, sometimes not. I always let him set the pace and he knows to stay to my right. This is just around my fairly rural neighborhood though, not near much traffic at all.
