Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've had enough of breaking rear derailleurs and having them fall apart, three in the last year. In a very British way, I've decided to 'bollocks to it' and have removed my rear derailleur altogether. I've decided to try converting my 7 bike to a SS (while leaving all the unused gears on). I wanted to ask a few questions about this:

How tight should the chain be?

I also assume that I should use a ratio that involves the straightest travel of the chain (if that makes sense)

I haven't actually used this bike for mountain biking as I have one at home for that, I use this bike simply for communting while at Uni (yeah, I know, why didn't I just buy a basic one)

If your chain is not straight, it will try to jump when you peddle hard. However, the cog that gives you the straightest chain may still not be staright enought and may be the wrong gear for your riding. IF you have cassette type cogs, you can take it apart ans play with the spacers and cog location until you have it the way you want.

Chain tightness, 1/2 up and down is a good place to start
