Hi all,

Another relatively new biker from the Northern Virginia area. I've been a biker pretty much all my life in some form or another. I had a bit of a hiatus after college since I didn't have a bike and no room to keep it. But I got back into about 3 years ago for about 3 months. Then again this past spring (end of March) I really got back into it. I now do charity rides, plus occasional century rides on the weekends, plus I commute to work 3 or 4 times per week (23 miles round trip). I'm actually going to go for my longest ride tomorrow. A friend and I are attempting a 200 KM ride up the C&O Towpath starting at Great Falls. It should be fun.

I'm a 32 year old male, and I'm really into the bike to lose weight at first. Now, I'm still trying to drop weight, but I have aspirations to maybe one day race and/or do triathalons. We'll see how that goes... but the first priority is to drop a lot of weight. I have an old beater mountain bike (GT Outpost) that I bought from a store that was going out of business for $75. It's in pretty decent shape, but needs some major overhaul. I use it for riding on dirt paths and for poor weather (rain/snow). I just bought a new road bike (LeMond Poprad) in April that I use for the road, bike paths, and commuting. I've already put 1800 miles on it and just recent wore thru my first rear tire... WOOHOO... lol. I just past 2100 miles since the end of March and am hoping to reach 3500 by the end of the year. I'm hoping to ride (commute) almost year around and next year my goal will be 5000 miles.

Thanks and look forward to post some more on this board.

Welcome to the forum, nice to see someone else from NOVA here on the site.

What's your favorite place to ride in N. Va?

I have mostly stuck to the bike paths for weekend riding and for commuting to work. I hit the W&OD Trail alot. And when I can I go on the Mount Vernon Trail and Custis Trail, plus the C&O Towpath. I just rode 105 miles on the C&O Towpath this weekend. Was a great ride.

How about you? Do you belong to any of the bike clubs in this area?

I work 1/2 mile from the WO&D, and ride the Mt. Vernon trail when I can. I am hoping to join the Reston Bike Club in the spring. I am in the process of building up a road bike and want some time to get used to it before I subject others to my lack of coordination. Right now I lug the mtb everywhere.

Sounds good. That's about how I started off... with a cheapo MB that I bought used for $75. I still have it. I keep it "so-so" shape. I actually rode it this past weekend when I did that 105 mile ride.

For the most part I prefer to ride my new bike though. I will probably go the "build it from scratch" route next time I buy a new bike. I've had to fix/replace way too many parts on this new bike. It would have definitely been cheaper and saved alot of time if I'd just built it from scratch. Plus, I'd love to try a Ti frame.

Happy riding... maybe we'll pass each other on the trail sometime :)
