Classic & Vintage - the hubs on my Trek 400 need some lube...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. ... do they get greased, oiled, or covered in Astroglide? (hehe)

yup
this is for newer hubs from Park Tool
http://parktool.com/repair/readhowto.asp?id=105
if you Google for re-packing hubs, you will likely find directions
sheldon brown:

or get an old Bike Maint book from the library
Red Devil Hub grease
a couple spanners
and maybe some replacment bearings
for old Treks, it's easy
(just make sure the ball bearings don't run away from you!)

I stopped by the lbs, and they sold me some teflon grease... 15 minutes later, the front was done, and spinning freely, with no noise...
An hour later, the rear was done, also spinning freely, with no noise...
My back tire is a little shaky at 60 mph (that's with the bike upside down in the lowest gear setting, spinning the crank at 100 rpm's)... going to take it to the lbs to have them true it, and swap out the freewheel for a 7 speed Suntour i have laying around...

problem... The rear axle drags a little.
I took the left side apart, and pulled the axle out the right (freewheel) side, but the freewheel side's cone nut still wants to tighten itself up a little as I ride.
Would loctite stop it from trying to tighten itself up?
It looks like this weekend's ride is off for me... No big deal- there's a huge 'ride for literacy' that is following a good part of the route we're taking, and I don't want to get lost while following the wrong crowd... LOL
dunno about the literacy part - tighten the nuts against one another sufficiently (with a washer in between) and there should be no subsequent movement...
geez. shouldn't drink wine and post. I should say tighten the locknut against the cone sufficiently...

Make things interesting when you go back & read 'em again the following day. Now, where did I put my glass...
After two bourbons, I'm still looking down and trying to see where the washer is supposed to go ?!?...

one side gets 1 washer, the other side gets 2 washers... The washers have a little tooth on them so that they don't rotate- the tooth slides into a channel on the axle.
I redid the rear bearings this morning after the wheel was noisy on the first leg (18 miles) of the 50 miles I ride today... I also swapped out the 13/27 six speed freewheel for a 12/21 seven speed freewheel, then rode 32 more miles with no noise, very little drag, etc.
Now, the crank needs lube. Does it ever end...
yeah. Then you buy another bike.

- tighten the nuts against one another sufficiently .......
Or do the opposite if you've been married for any length of time, cuz your nuts are tight enough already.... :D
