Classic & Vintage - broken barcon expander bolt,

I was removing the barcons from an old fuji allegro rescued from the trash, the handles were hoboe'd and the seatpost was flattened from being overtightened, it reads 26.6, and the frame syas it has valite tubing, the front fork has obnoxious recesses in the droppouts so that the QR won't work,

I was able to remove one of the suntour barcons that were on super tight, the second one though after I had loosened it snapped at the threading for the expander bolt, how the heck can I get this part or fix something up?

You have your work cut out for you. The allen head bolt is 6mm I believe, and is loosened clockwise, not the normal counterclockwise. If it is snapped off, try to grip the aluminum 'head' (where the shifter itself slides into) with some channel locks and try twisting it side to side. Do this gently and try not to crush this 'head'. If you can get it out of the end of the bar just a bit, you might be able to get a hacksaw blade in and saw it off. Best of luck.

I could be mistaken, but I've never seen bar-con parts for sale, and I doubt you're going to have success going that route. You may need to replace the whole thing. Shouldn't be all that expensive - maybe $10.00 - $15.00 at most to replace one.

I assume that the broken bolt and expander are still in the handlebar? It may be easiest to swap out the bars, but if you need to save the bars, you need to drill an appropriately sized hole in the broken bolt and insert the appropriately sized easy out and wind that sucka outta dere. the expander is probably bound to the bar with rust...fill the bar with sudsy parson's ammonia and let'er set. that'll probably dissolve enough rust to get it out.

The root of the problem is that the bars are upside down, allowing water to enter and remain in the handlebar...you'll get better service if you swap 'em with a flat or a city bar...and put that stem back into the bike below the maximum extension line that is engraved on the side or you're gonna lose some teeth when it breaks.

Reality is you are not going to use those bars again, so get a hacksaw and cut the end off the bar. Then use a dremel or similar and cut the bar open lengthwise to get the part out.

Once you get the part out, you should be able to replace the 6mm bolt fairly easy at any good hardware store.

I tend to agree with Dirtdrop-this is done and over with ! The remaining parts fell out and so did some water. End of bar-con story.
