With the approach of "short days," I want to cycle year round and will need some simple lights. I don't want anything big and awkward. What do you all suggest?

I fitted a dynamo style headlamp to the front fork (using the brake bolt), and wired it to a battery inside a waterbottle. I used simple crimp connectors, and bought the battery and a decent recharger (which automatically switches to trickle charging when full) from an electronics store. It worked out a bit cheaper than the cheapest waterbottle-battery system, but a lot better.
The lamp is a 6v , 3watt system, but the beam pattern from a modern European headlamp is optimised, so it is as bright as more powerfull floodlight systems.
My battery is a 6v 2.8 Ah lead acid one since they are easier to maintain; you can fit longer lasting ones, or smaller, lighter NiCads and more modern types.

You could check over at the Commuting forum. There have been many threads on lights. The new Cateye model with 5-LEDs looks like a great basic light. Adequate light and impressive battery life. Not enough light for high speed in the dark though adequate for commuting at modest speeds, say 15-17. For higher speeds you will need to go with at least 10W and probably 15W to see far enough. My Vistalite setup works well, but the battery only gets about one hour with the 15W light. Vistalite is defunct, but there are other brands with higher power.
