Tandem Cycling - Track tandems?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Is this something that happens regularly, or tis this a one-off kind of thing???

In the US, there is at least one "demonstration" Tandem Sprint event for track tandems called "Tandemonium" held at Trexlertown, PA each year. However, other than that, santioned track tandem racing has all but disappeared with one exception: Paralympic track tandem racing for disabled (usually sight or hearing impaired) which is quite popular throughout the world.
The demise of tandem track racing started when it was dropped as an Olympic event after the 1972 Olympics at Munich, Germany. As for USCF & UCI events, I'm not exactly sure when it happened (1995?), but UCI and USA Cycling stopped sanctioning non-disabled track tandem events / the tandem sprint as they were deemed "too dangerous"... noting that when track tandems do crash the speeds and carnage really are pretty nasty. I believe Marty Northstein was actually involved in one of the last crashes before the events were eliminated.
However, paralympic tandem track racing is alive and well...

You'll also find some pretty slick time trial tandems as tandem road cycling events are still sanctioned by various cycling organizations.
BTW, Don Walker, who build the tandem in your photo, is a very active poster/reader at Bike Forums and I wouldn't be surprised to see him pop in here. Perhaps he can answer ElReys question since he knows the riders in question.

I would guess zero. Just look like short, stocky folks to me. Typical sprinters.

WOW! NIce track tandem, neat bent rear seat tube to shorten wheelbase a bit, but could've pulled back wheel a bit closer in.
Have riden track on tandem at Kenosha and Major Taylor'drome in Indianapolis. A real blast!
