Bicycle Mechanics - Handlebar & Stem Clamp Size

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Handlebars and Stems have different clamp sizes. Do they have to have exact matching clamp sizes to match up?
I would think that if a stem had a removable face plate, they would fit any bar, but perhaps I'm wrong? Can anybody set me straight?

They do need to match.
I'm pretty sure most handle bar centre sections, and thus stem clamp sizes, are all one inch ie 25.4mm. HTH.
You are certainly a little right about the 25.4mm It's found on mtb and hybrid. The heads up for today is that road bars can be 25.4(very few),25.8,26.0, 26.4, and 31.7/8mm

Yes, I did a little research, and it seems like 25.8 is the normal. 31.8 is the oversized measurement. There aren't many inbetween.
25.8 really ain't the 'normal' and don't kid yourself into that.Measure to be sure. There is all kinds and vintages of stuff floating around out there.

LoL, yes, I've been around long enough to know that you have to be very careful with cycling equipment...
