I am new to biking. Actually I started 2 months ago. I am getting ready for a long ride 180 miles, 2 days. This ride is purely recreational.
Does shaving provide that much of a benfit or is it more for competitive advantage?

There's no particular advantage to shaving, but some people swear by it. However, it tends to make treatment easier in case of accident. Personally, I don't.

I don't shave either. I'm too damn lazy, and I don't naturally have all that much hair (in spite of my avatar).
I don't shave, and I'm usually the furriest beast on any given club ride. This is a bit unsigthly, tho, especially when my leg hairs poke through my cold weather tights!
I don't mind being called a squirrel-in fact, I actually like squirrels!
The advantage is that chicks love it, and it makes a good tan and muscles look great, but you will also look silly if you don't have the legs for it. Imagine shaven white chicken legs:eek:  :D
