Mountain Biking - Shimano tourney-to-deore

Hi, i've been mountain biking for almost a year know and when i started i bought a schwinn s-40 from my LBS. After six months i was encountering many problems and was wonder if it is worth the money to convert from all shimano tourney to all deore. And how much stonger it is. I don't really want to get a new bike because it will cost less to do the full conversion than to get a new bike.

It's a fair bit better, just be prepared to switch to 9 speed though, but since you plan on doing a full swap you're probably aware of that already. If by you mean deraillieurs, shifters, brakes, brake levers, and crankset, and bottom bracket, you're looking at an expensive purchase at a lbs or via online. Also if online, you'll likely need to instal them yourself, which you will need the right tools to install them and the tools needed aren't exactly cheap either. If you're bent on the whole upgrade, best to do it at a bikeshop.

Well i have of tools, and i think the cost to do the whole thing was like $360 thats not that badconsidering i could get the whole rear assembly by april. Money is fairly scarce because i cant get a job at my age but by april i will have $250 to spend. But i really need to know if it is gonna be worth the money, with the whole conversion i will have better componets than a hardrrock comp. Thanks for the reply.
P.S. How big of a drop will i be able to take with out throwing it all out of wack?

you might as well ride it till it dies, then take the money you saved and buy a real bike.

no thatis definately not my bike. Mybike has a different fork and different shifters and differenr brakes and i got mine at the LBS. But what isthe componentry difference between tourney and deore.
P.S. that might be my bike but i bought mine used at the lbs. why should i get rid of the bike everything is upgradeable.

Well, kind-of. If that's your bike, the suspension frame may hinder you. To make it truly perform it would cost as much if not more than a very nice and new (or higher end used) bike. Upgrading the group isn't that big of a deal cost-wise and if you end up building your own bike for your next one (there's always a "next one" out there :)) you could re-use the components if you chose to. But, like I said, to make it "truly perform" is another matter.

Why would thesuspension hinder me, is it not upgradeable. I don't mind thesuspension thats on it but if it is upgraedable i would like to upgrade it later. I don't do alot of hard core riding i have never come close to using all of my traveleven on larger drops. Well if all else fails i'll buy a specialized hardrock sport disc, but i don't know how i'll muster up $600

If you have never come close to using all of your travel then you probably have your bike set up incorrectly. I use all of my travel on every ride I do even if there are no drops on the ride.

Toss that double-boinger, it's not worth upgrading. Cant agree more.... Put 50$ asside for needed parts & stuff, and the rest gose to the... BANK. don don don don...

Yeah, take it from a guy who bought one of these full suspension POS bikes...it's not worth upgrading anything. I'd only spend money on tubes. Better save your money up for a nice hardtail. The problem with these department store bikes is that they immitate technology that costs $1500+ in real life.

Ok, i'm gonna go with my instinc and go with what you guys are saying because you propably know a lot more about this kind of stuff then me. Well i have a decision to make, should i buy the Hardrock sport disc, K2 Zed2.0/3.0 or anything else that is decent in that price range, give me some suggestions on a good hardtail. I'm also gonna surch the $500 mtb thread know.

i love the hardrock. thats all i'll say.

Hardrock is a puppy of a bike, and perfect for a beginner with limited funds.

i agree on the hardrock, i love mine. but i dont't know why you are so hung up on the sport disc. If you are that low on cash the v brakes are fine. i ride kiondd of hard and in all weather conditions and as long as you keep the brakes adjusted they stop me everytime and im alomst 190 pounds. I paid $412.00 out the door, tax and all for my 05 hardrock sport. I have heard some people get them a little cheaper but my lbs gives free service for the life of the bike. 400 for all that, cant beat it.

There's tons of awesome choices in your price range. Try as many bikes out as possible in bike stores in your area.

K2, Gary Fisher, Trek, Cannondale, Motobecane, Felt, Kona, Jamis, Fuji, Giant, KHS, even Iron Horse and Raleigh (check the model) all make great bikes.

I say forget disk brakes for now if your shooting entry level. Well tuned V-brakes give just as much as braking power as a cheap disk and are way more reliable at that price range. If you have disk brakes paired to a cheap fork they can actually rip the mounts off (so i've heard) in some cases. You can get better wheels or components which are more important in my opinion. Disk brakes totally kick a$$, but only if you want to shill out $$$.

Oh yeah, avoid any and ALL full suspension bikes at this price.

Well i was thinking of the disc because in the long run it's gonna be cheaper, i don't wnat to fork out alot of money later just so i can get disc brakes, does anyone know the average price af the k2 zed3.0, and how much it can take compared to the hardrock, also should i buy my bike near the end of the year to get the discounts on the older models while there trying to get rid of them?

the discounts should be happening around now. on the lower end models (like hardrock) don't wait too long because they go FAST.

Well i have to wit till next year because i am currently broke and am not old enough to have a job, hopefully i might get one in the spring but most likely not because almost everywhere you have to be 16 and i'm almost 15 but buy april i might have $250 mustered up. But does any one know of the difference between the k2 and the specialized( Price, performance, weight. )
