if urr frame is not italian (eg not columbous) and is tange tubing (u said japan and tange is japan) then u have english threading..

The bottom bracket itself will have the size and threading etched on it.

yah but if the bike is from japan, then its tange tubing which is usually english threading.

Even made in Italy frickin Bianchis have had English threads for some time. In any event, don't guess as some are prone to do,but check what's on the BB.

The self-tightening British format is steadily becoming the single universal standard for BB threads on new bicycles. Unless you have a pre-1980 French frame, the rule is:

1) If the adjustable cup and lockring are 35mm = 1.375" in diameter, the fixed cup will be left-threaded.
2) If the adjustable cup and lockring are 36mm in diameter, the fixed cup will be right-threaded (boo, hiss).

Sheldonbrown.com has a good discussion of the four (two obsolete, one semi-obsolete) BB thread/diameter standards.

If you keep an old adjustable cup of known diameter in your junk box, you can readily assess any bike you encounter.

Incidentally, I have yet to read a cogent account of how Italian threading ended up with a metric diameter (36 mm) and English thread pitch (24 TPI).

--- In an increasingly metric world, why did English BB threading win out over Swiss?

I am going to order a BB from Ebay before I take off my old one. (switching to a triple) I have a 2002 Raleigh R700. Would that most likely have the English threading?

Definitely.

I also confidently predict that within the decade, all new bicycles will come with English BB threads.

For those of us who collect older European bicycles, replacement parts availability is a growing concern. I did successfully rethread my (Swiss-threaded) 1980 Peugeot for an English fixed cup when I converted it to a triple chainring, but I do not claim this to be an exemplary practice!
