FM. I have not seen the article, though I will look for it tomorrow. I rode the full seven day SJHS this summer, it is an excellent, rewarding tour. Their website does an adequate, at best, job of explaining what to expect...email me with your questions, zlj75@hotmail.com, please do a subject line referring to San Juan Huts, so I can recognize it alongside the junk mail.
The ride is mostly on fireroads, and being able to ride through the topography changes of the high alpine Rockies in Telluride, down to the canyonlands in Moab, is amazing. There are some great all day climbs, Day 6, and some great descending days too.
The huts are what you expect from backcountry huts, they are well stocked with food...we wish SJHs had put a food list together, so we would have known what to expect each night, but live and learn.
I highly recommend bringing at least one book, a hacky sack, a deck of cards, and drugs if that;s your thing. We found we had lots of time to kill at the end of each day. We are pretty experienced riders and were covering the mileage in well less than half the expected time.
All in all it's a great trip. Email me with questions. Zach
PS> Travel light!!! We rode with just large camelbaks the Transalp, and no panniers...that is the way to go. If I did it again I would go even lighter.

Picked that magazine up...that is a very accurate description of the trip, would not recommend linking the last two days in to one...that would be a tough day, and you would lose out on one of the best huts for the trip...but then again they were in a hotel bed a day sooner!! See ya...
