And is it really wise for me to be riding great distances as i have no fat to burn?
I am 6ft and 112pounds
I'm 6'1" and I weighed 135lbs when I got through hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Personally, I think you need to do some bulking up.

Try adding powerbars and protein shakes in between meals. Make sure you are eating enough calories. Add a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to each meal. Eat something every 2-3 hours regardless of whether or not you are hungry.

I'm underweight too.
I'm an embrassing 105 pounds and I'm 5'7".
I'm only 16 btw.
But I've actually gained weight just cycling. Because it makes you incredibly famished.
I used to be around 100 near April.
I actually don't get how people can lose weight cycling.
First you gotta load up the night before to make you got energy the next day. Then you're absolutely dying for food after the ride.

Don't worry about it. Being skinny is a medical condition called good health. You should have no problem riding distance, just add miles slowly.

I dunno. 6 feet tall and 112 pounds? That's reeeeeaaaaalllllly skinny. That's getting close (if not already at) sickly skinny.

How can it be sickly skinny? If he eats wells and exercise, which he said he does, then he's perfectly healthy. Some people, like me, are just naturally skinny, it's not like we starve ourselves. It has to do with a mixture of genetics and bodily and chemical structure.
Sound like a hard-gainer ... as in, you can eat almost anything but it won't stay on. Hard gainers are very receptive to weight training though ... it'll take more to start gaining, but you have to work less relateively to keep it continuing. 1 gram of protien for each lbs of muscle you want to have per day and make sure to do strength training in addition to cycling. Cycling will burn fat, but if you don't have any, it'll start using other stuff, like muscle mass. My personal regiment, 3 days of weight training, 4-5 days of cycling (to and from work) and then a fun weekend ride or two.

because one can exercise too much if they aren't taking in enough calories. It's that simple. And it sounds as if he doesn't eat enough calories.

Wow, you sound like me. 6'1" and 126-128 on a good day. I actually went to the ER with a partially collapsed lung once because I thought I was having a heart attack. Doc said "nope, when your fat % gets to low the connecting tissues can just let go". Scary stuff. I say ride how and when you want. Your body will let you know when it needs a break and some food.
I just try and eat a good meal (at least a sandwich) before riding and eat frequently on the bike. Fig Newtons, small cookies, etc work really well for me to get in the calories. I also always try to eat and drink (sports drink) immediately after a ride to be sure my body has enough to refuel with.
Avoid the "eat McDonalds every day" plan. Did it for a 2months, back in HS, gained absolutely no weight. The solution: beer:)
Load up on protein and fatty meals, but don't kill your self eating a McProcessed Greasewhich every day.
I tip the scales at 185 lbs. I'm 6'5". Gotta love dutch genes :)

dont worry my friend. Im 182cm and 120lbs. Almost the same as you. Im 22 yrs old now and for few years already, i tried a lot of foods to gain weight but it just wont work. From Mc D's to Dunkin Donuts, take more meats and more supper before i go to sleep, tried plentiful of different weight gainers(the last product i tried was GNC Pro Performance Weight Gainer 2200 choco flavour.I bought it three times and spent quite a lot on it) and other stuff as well. But still, 52kg is my max weight.lol!
I even consulted doctor about how to gain weight but in my opinion, i think it is the gene. Docs said there isnt any need for me to gain weight and just let it be. Then, i started to cut off those whey protein products(save the money for buying cycling gears instead) and eat like normal. I completely give up. I dont see anything wrong with skinny body and legs. Well, maybe you dont look nice when u put on the cycling jersey..lol and maybe, u arent able to sprint like those with lean muscles fella out there. Concentrate on hills. Just make 100% use of how your body looks like. Become a climber ;)

Wow! Check out all the skinny dudes! I'm pretty slight too, at 5'9" and 127 lbs. Nothing I eat ever makes me fat. Cycling and lifting weights made me gain five pounds, but it is all muscle. If I stop exercising, I lose weight.
To address the OP, you really don't have any fat on you. I thought I didn't but you're taller and ligther than I am. If you go out and ride a long distance all of a sudden, your body will just start digesting your muscles to get the energy you need. If you were trying to lose fat, long, easy paced rides would be great, but you're not doing that. You need to get your muscles working hard so that they can bulk up.
If you ever get snowed in up in the mountains, I'd worry about your mates drawing straws on who's gonna eaten first...
The way I see it, he has nothing to worry about. Why would you eat the guy with the least meat on his bones?
It's the big, buff guy that should worry. ;)

Go to GNC, get some good quality weight gain shake, and start lifting weights everyday, or every other day, alternating upper and lower body workouts. Seriously, your weight sounds almost dangerously low for your height.

This has got to be the first "skinny" guy thread. Usually its quite the opposite. My wife said if I ever hit my goal of 150lbs. (5'7") that I'll be to skinny. All the online calculators say 147lbs. should be ideal for my height. You guys must look like holocaust survivors to be that tall and light.
Not sure which problem is worse. You have to pay extra for all that food to try and bulk up. I'm paying the hard way to slim down but at least I save money in the process.

Cipo, I'd see a doctor about putting on some weight. He'd probably say not to worry until you are over 30 but I'd check it out; make sure you aren't anemic or something.
Dtrain, your weight is fine, about where I was when I wrestled as a sophomore in high school. Well, I was 5'4" at the time, too.
Make sure you keep eating the carbs while riding and eat plenty of protein between rides. And to put that protein to good use, start a weighlifting regimen.

Reiley, you didn't mention your age, but if you have a "stay skinny" metabolism like me and others here, welcome to your life! There's nothing wrong with being skinny, you may just have to work harder than most to get much muscle mass. Enjoy being a good climber, as one poster said.
I can't gain weight either. I'm 50, been 5'3" and near 100 lbs. since I was 16. I got to 105 twice, but only after work assignments where I worked nights and ate at restaurants for weeks on end. The "extra" weight evaporated soon after I got back home. You might be dealing with a metabolism something like this.
You'll be OK on extended cycling trips if you pay attention to eating frequently; your body will tell you if you aren't. I know when I drop to 100 lbs, I start getting hungry all the time and eat like a teenager.

Rieley: If you have a high metabolism, eating more probably isn't going to make much
difference. As bbattle suggested, the only way you are going to put on some pounds is lifting weights. I weighed about 123 (at 5' 6") when I was in my twenties. I started weight training hard and went up to about 143 within two years. Oddly enough, even after I cut way back on the frequency and intensity of my
workouts, most of that gain stayed with me. I'm about 138 now, and that's the lowest I've been in the past twenty five years.

drinki beer and then eat greasy food. you'll put weight on in no time. i've seen it happen with one of my super skinny friends. now he has a beer gut! hehehe, well really, beer is a bad option to gain weight. Start lifting weights and eating A LOT of protein.

I love this thread. I am reading it more out of curiosity and the fact that it is so interesting after so many weight loss threads. I don't need to gain or lose weight, but what I would love to do is cook for somebody like you. You would be the Italian grandmother's dream son! Why don't you marry an Italian girl on good terms with her family? That's my solution. :)
