I need suggestions on shoe and pedals for less than $200. I ride in philadelphia and just started messenging and my pedals are beat to crap. So any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i second the eggbeaters. maybe look for some shoes by 661 if you want to be able to walk around in them otherwise just grab a pair that fits and your golden.

MTB shoes I find work great cause they have some traction so make sure you pick up some of them

I bought my shoes (Diadora Geko's) and pedals (CB eggbeaters) from Performance. I think I spent around $110 total. The Geko's weren't the cheapest either, but I wanted shoes sans leather. You should be able to get a good combo for under $100 if you are willing to wait awhile for what you want to go on sale.

some 105 spd-sl's (like $65) and a pair of specialized shoes for like $75. cant go wrong.

specialized bottom of the line road or mountain shoe (still a nice shoe by any means) 75 bucks
shimano SPD pedals 55 bucks

you could even go with the SPD-SL "lance-style"/"look style" 105 pedals for like 65-70, although walking in them is slightly more difficult, and they only mount on road shoes. your best bet is the SPD's, with specialized mountain shoes

Ask me for barely used size 47 Exustars and very used Atacs for a hundred bucks when I'll be in Philly in a week or so, and I swear I'll spend the dough on better shoes and a new set of atacs. You can talk me down to ninety. Extremely worn cleats included!

As you've probably figured out by now, you can get just about any pedal/shoe combination that isn't top of the line SIDIs and speedplays for under $200. MTB systems are the best for regular dismounting. Vans even makes shoes that are SPD compatible, so you can probably put crank bros. cleats on them too.

Whatever you do, do not skimp on your shoes. They are one of the 3 contact points with your bike and the most important. I've had all kinds of shoes in the past and have found Sidi's to be far superior to any other shoe. Also, look into getting Superfeet insoles, you'll notice the difference. If you can't afford Dominators check out the Bullet II. THey are pretty much the same shoe just with a different closing mechanism.
