Fifty Plus (50+) - Any Interest In A (shudder) Indoor Trainer Support Group?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Koffee Brown says we don't need this.
She has deleted my invitation to the Road Cycling group to join in.
I've had it with continuously getting shot down by the moderators on any new idea.
One in particular seems to be gunning for me.
Got to leave for awhile.
Bye.
(I imagine this post has about a snowball's chance in heck of lasting more than 5 minutes before it is removed!)

I can see the interest is underwhelming.
Another dud idea by Fox!
I shall carry on by myself, against overwhelming odds!

If I had a trainer, I would be in your group. I do think it is a good idea, just have not bought one yet.
Well, sort of. I'm thinking of buying a Lamond spin cycle. Actually, pretty close to doing it. The reasons for a spin cycle, rather than a trainer, are (1) having my bikes readily available and (2) all of my family could use it (don't want them messing with the adjustments of my other bikes).
The Lamond should pretty much give the same workout as a trainer. Just need to pull the trigger. My wife has already offered her approval, although she favored the Lamond recumberant indoor cycle, but that costs about $2500 and takes up a lot more room
Here's a picture.

My wife has been in ill health lately. There are times when I simply can not get out and must be available here.
And, really, I do not, and will not, ride when there is a 30 mph wind with blowing snow and the temp at 10F. I don't consider it safe and I believe it is foolishness to expose myself to injury when I have spent so much trying to get at least partially whole again.
The cars are spinning all over the place, the trail is all ice, the roads have huge snowplows. Nope!
Perhaps some cross country skiing, though!

Got to agree about the weather conditions that you have, BUT Due to a change in the weather in the past 10 years, where I live we do not have the severe weather. And then As I ride off road, a little bit of rain, and cold and --Forgotten what is, but it is when the Ground looks as though someone has sprinkled Chalk all over the countrydide-- SNOW-- thats what it is, but we only have a sprinkling if we are lucky.
I have never got on with trainers, exercise bikes are too heavy to lift into the only place suitable for them (Rubbish Bins) And although I did a lot of spinning at the Gym this year- using the bike got me fitter easier. Mind you- The rest of the gym with the cross trainer, the Rowing, thetreadmill and the best bit THE SAUNA, did add a lot to my fitness, but that was before we decided to try night riding.
Plus the fact I will be spending my GYM subscriptions on the parts I will be wearing out on the bikes, by using them more.

Damn good idea, Denver. I wouldn't mind knowing what people do to keep going while riding a trainer. I tend to see if I can get through half of a basketball game, hammering during the commercials and spinning during the actual game. You'd be amazed (or maybe not) how much hammering you end up doing--and how long 20 basketball minutes really takes.

I recall reading about a racer who went into a large, totally dark closet with a fan for ventilation and rode stationary for 3 hours in sensory deprivation to "get in touch with his body". After an hour on the trainer I'm so bored, even with the tv on, I couldn't get in touch with a ham sandwich.

Well, that isn't so far fetched, IMHO. You should try it or at least a less radical sensory deprivation variation.
My trainer is setup in my workshop and I keep the lights off, allowing only some day light to seep through the smaller basement windows. It is far from black-dark I assure you.
Because, I'm obviously not moving and the scenery stagnates in moments, the low light prevents me from focusing too intensely on static objects around my immediate field of vision and getting bored immediately.
I tend to close my eyes for minutes at a time while visualizing some stretch of road that I am familiar with and recreate that ride from memory. I become very focused on my breathing and aware of my leg fatigue, much the same as I do on a challenging piece of road or grade/hill climb.
I tune-out my surroundings and tune-in my task(ride). An analog clock ticks off the punishing minutes. My "must do" goal is 5 minutes per gear on an old 2x6 speed road bike, for a total of 60 minutes, the absolute maximum. Sixty minutes of trainer is the equivalent to 2 hours on the road in my book.
If I cheat and only complete say, 50 minutes due to excruciating boredom, to me that's like quitting a metric century at kilometre 90.
PS: an MP3 player helps to maintain a rhythm or cadence, too

Koffe Brown - official forum moderator says we do not need another thread on indoor trainers, so just forget it.
Sorry to bother folks.
Koffee doesn't own these forums DenverFox.
Don't go.

She doesn't - you'd never know it!
I do about one and a half hours per day on my trainer as I am trying to get my amputated foot to take more than one days riding at a time.
It is an integral part of my training, there are some systems that are actually better on the trainer than on the road.
I hope this riding season to do a two day tour, a 150 + K "fun ride" which is a race after the first 100 Metres while every body says that they are not going to race.
I then hope to do a 2 day, 5 stage road race in February, which is in the height of our summer.
To do any of this I have to put the mileages in and the only way to do that is time on the trainer.
I have yet to get "bored" on the trainer. I use a compilation of music to keep different cadence rythms, and while riding i occasionally watch a cycling video, but it tends to interupt my listening to music.
By Xmas I hope my program will include two hours a day as well as road work in the training program.
Then it is on to the masters games where i ride with only "non disabled' riders.
I cannot be bothered with the "disabled" riders here in New Zealand as they are a bunch of whiners. More trainig than most others I find keeps me near to keeping up with the bunch.
So Don't knock me trainer as it is a great help to me and my riding, not that me riding is that flash anyway, but one tries.

DF.....From your response 2 posts above--you're back!! Way cool. At least I hope so.
In any event, best wishes to your wife on things getting better for both her and you both.

Of course, a misinterpretation of my wording because of whatever problems he may have with the forum rules and such. But we will work it out at some point.
In the meantime, there is another member who is a knowledgeable source for our forums who will put together a more informative thread for people training in the wintertime. It will be in the Training and Nutrition forum. Whatever you do in the 50+ forum is up to you all, since you all have said that older populations have special needs. To that end, we don't really spend a lot of time in the 50+ forum, and in fact, I have not commented very often in this forum, nor have I participated in this thread until this time about the need for such a subject matter.
Anyway, in the coming week, we will have something in Training and Nutrition, and we will have someone in that thread to answer the plethora of questions we expect to result from the creation of that thread.

Koffee..........without sounding secessionist, the point might be that we don't have questions so much for an authorized expert, as a desire for a forum for the sharing of our own experiences and age-filtered, age-appropriate wisdom. Sometimes in cycling and some other aspects of life, we olde fartes are put off in the corner-- you can't blame us for making a little home for ourselves. I don't think such a thread would be replicating anything in Training and Nutrition, nor would it make us feel elitist or you nonFiftyPlussers feel resentful. Heck, you're welcome to drop by and rock with us a spell any time...you can join in as we pass around the Geritol and discuss prostate-friendly saddles.
**If you're as young and appealing as I think you are, I'd be happy to move over and make a place for you between me and FarHoriz0n! He may be married, but I'm not.
Again, you're not understanding. I have NOTHING to do with the 50+ forum. Whatever you guys do in here is up to you. I have no comments about this topic in the 50+ forum. Go for it. Knock yourselves out.
I hope this is clear. I never commented about such a thread in this forum. Again, I understand older people have their own needs, and I never stepped into this forum to state an opinion about what you do or don't want or need. In the Training and Nutrition forum, however, things will be quite different, as there will be something along these lines, but more involved, since Training and Nutrition is about... training... oh, and nutrition too.
I use Ben Gay too.

I don't mind working out on my trainer in bad weather. I have a fan, a TV and a DVR setup to keep me cool and my mind occupied. I record action movies off HBO and watch them while spinning. For me, watching normal TV with all the commercial interruptions is worst than no TV at all. Each time a commercial comes on, I totally loose my enthusiasm for spinning. However, watching movies is totally different. Once I get into a movie, especially an adrenaline pumping, martial arts movie, I totally forget I am spinning. Then I want to keep spinning until the end of the movie.
