10 years ago when I last rode any kind of bike (motorcycles no withstanding) there were a few paved bike trails around the area, so I figure by now there must be more, right?

Back then I rode the Stevens Creek trail, the Crystal Springs Trail and maybe a few bike paths in/around Vasona park in Los Gatos (possibly part of the Stvn. Crk. trail) and Soreline Park in Mountain View. The trail at Shoreline Park wandered all over the place and makes me wonder if it might be a part of the "Bay Trail" system I've read about?

What I'm looking for is recommendations for some nice, smooth cycle trails, suitable for a low slung Tadpole and an out of pratice (read: out of shape) rider.

I have absolutely no intention of ever riding it on the street, but rather hauling the trike on the roof of my Honda to parks and trails in the area.

BTW... For those of you familiar with the area, I live on the Peninsula between Redwood City and San Mateo. I'm willing to drive a ways once in a while, but would like to keep it local whenever possible.

Are there bike trails in Muir Woods?

Try the Alameda Creek trail in Fremont. It goes from the foot of Niles Canyon out to the edge of the bay. It's basically flat, with a few "dips" under bridges. It's a nice ride and paved all the way. bk

The Bay Trail is not paved in many places. We ride the Alameda Creek Trail occassionaly, and it's a 22 mile ride end to end. The closest point to you would be just across the Dumbarton Bridge at Coyote Hills. You could also get on the trail at the park by the bay on Marsh Road(old dump?), and ride over the Dumbarton Bridge to the Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge. The road on the east side of the bridge is open to traffic most of the time, though.
Canada Rd is closed to car traffic on Sundays. You could always ride up Edgewood Rd and hang a right onto Canada.
The East Bay Bicycle Coalition has maps, as does the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition. I know we've ridden trails south of you, and across the south end of the bay to Alviso.

Many bike shops have maps showing trails in different areas of the bay.
