Hey There,
I have owned my Free Spirit "Brittany" 3sp for about a year now and it's verging on unridable. Due to a couple of spills The gear shift has completely flown off. I shove a rock in the shift pulley to keep it in second instead of third but it would be really great if I could just get it fixed and use all three gears. I have taken it into two shops (not that many) and no one seems to carry the part. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I'm pretty handy with tools but also pretty bike illiterate.
Thanks
margaret

hmm... check out bikepartsusa.com. They seem to have a plethora of parts.
It wouldn't hurt to check sheldon brown's website, either :)
If you're handy with tools, you definitely have the potential to be bike literate :) Bikes are pretty simple to work on.
good luck!

There used to be a book called Glenn's Bicycle Repair manual that might help.

Do you have a picture of the shifter? I'm wondering if it's compatible with most 3-speed shifters. If so, worse case senerio is to go to a thrift store and pick up a second 25-dollar 3-speed for parts.
Also, to harayz, Maybe this will help: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/s-a/sa-cutaway.gif it might not be the same one but maybe it'll give you an idea of something to try.
