Commuting - First Time!!

I rode my bike to school this weekend.
My wife suggested it on Fri nite, and I was thinking about it, but I doubted I would actually do it.
Then I saw a PBS special about the FDNY firefighters that rode across the country and it motivated me to give it a shot.
It isn't as far as I thought, only 6 mi., but it really felt great.
I have to admit I didn't actually ride home though.
My wife met me after class and we rode together to a little craft festival, and then rode to lunch and back to school, where we put the bikes on the car for the ride home. 13 miles total ride though.

Gonna try riding to the train station for the commute to work next week.

Cool. It does seem odd at first because our culture is so centered on driving to get from point A to B. After commuting for awhile you'll feel find it strange that everyone is driving in those huge cars to travel just a few miles. I started out riding to the train station but now I just skip the train altogether.

I'd skip the train but that'd leave me doing a century+ every day. 60 mi e.w. to the office:(

How far is the ride to the station?

I haven't measured it, but I think it's about 5 or 6 mi.

Ouch. I only have to ride 8mi. to work. With the train it's only 2.

Congratulations! It's amazing how "short" the perceived distances become when you ride more and more. Your friends are amazed but it becomes easy and most important enjoyable for you.

I'd like to commute to work. Unfortunately, so much of my day is spent outside the office traveling to meetings and such that it just wouldn't work.

Everyone in the store next to my office commutes to work though. It's my LBS! Real convenient for keeping my AMEX balance up:p
