So I'm riding this morning before work (I manage to squeeze in an early am ride a few times a week during weekdays) and I get to a point right before a small hill. And I mean SMALL hill (even for Florida)...probably no more than 25 feet of elevation.
There is a mom with her two kids on the trail, and she pulls her one boy back who is kind of in the middle as I'm coming up. He turns to see me and starts yelling:
Go, mister, go!!
Go, go, go!!
You can do it, you can do it!!
I was giggling all the way up the hill....and for another mile afterward too, I think.

Floridans laugh at the face of danger in light of a hurricane but cower at a slight hill

It's that stuff they put in drinking water to make you think GW Bush is the only person who can protect us from the commies.

The road up Cadilac Mountain is 5 miles of narrow, winding and yes, very steep in places, particularly if you start at sea level in the town of Bar Harbor. Add to this that there are strong crosswinds and headwinds as you go up. This road is something that even I have to train for to ride up without stopping.
Can you? Good training and good luck.

Flordia may not have too many hills, but it has some serious bridges. Then the infamous quarries.

Taunted? Is your rubber glove on too tight? Or the glitter moisturizer seeping in too far?
He *meant* to be encouraging!

If I am reading my map correctly, the climb up Neel's gap is about 1500 feet in 7 miles. You then descend for a few miles and climb Wolf Pen Gap. Wolf Pen Gap is at 3,454 ft. The climb is about 5 miles long with around 1,000 feet of elevation gain. So we're looking at about 2,500 feet of elevation gain in 12 miles.
I did stop for a few minutes at the top of Neel's Gap and had planned to stop on Wolf Pen Gap at the spot where my friend Matthew missed a turn and got killed last spring. When I got to the spot I knew that, with my heart rate as high as it was, if I stopped I would would throw up. I just said a little prayer and kept on riding.
