rollers and front tire

I know that I read it somewhere on here before, but I was unable to find it... I just got rollers and tonight I am going to give them a try... but this is my question...
how far infront do you want the front roller compared to your front axel? I have it set at about 3 inches, but I could move it back so that it is about 1.5"... I just want to have a fighting chance to stay on the rollers

I have my front roller directly under the front-axle. Seems to give more natural feeling to the bike.

Start out in a big gear, like 38x15t to get some momentum going to stabilize yourself. I'll shift to lower and lower gears until I'm in my lowest gear and spin that up for working on the form.

In order to stay on the rollers you have to be able to steer, the further the front roller is in front of the axle the more difficult it will be to steer. 3" is not so far as to be a likely problem but it probably won't help all that much either. I learned to ride by putting the rollers next to a wall and bumped off the wall with my shoulder til the balance trick was learned. Once you have this worked out move the roller so it is just below the axle.

theory says the center of the roller should be as close to centered under the axle as possible, but if your rollers don't permit that, err to the side of being behind the axle. If you can do 1.5", then 3" is too far. A doorway is a good place to start. You want your wheels turning pretty fast for stability -- I find I'm not comfortable until 16 mph indicated, though maybe I should try riding slower.

I'm trying to figure out how to stand up on the rollers. It seems that when I do, my weight goes too far forward and then the rear wheel rides up and over and out of the rollers. And then I fall over and hurt something. I'm going to try increasing the distance between the two rear rollers...

Thanks for the input... I survived on my fixed (42x16)... a little scary at first... but that was at 3" I am going to try tomorrow with it at 1.5" and hope it is better...

Think the ideal front roller lead is about 1 cm in front of the front axle but YMMV
