I've been looking around lately, and im trying to find a nice hardtail bike with at least deore shifters under about 27lbs and less than $900. Is KHS a good brand?

You could get a specialized stumpjumper for $900. Xtr rear derailleur, fox fork, avid v brakes, lx shifters. And its only 24 lbs. Nice bike. Its actually mine, and I have only ridden it once. Retails for $1450

Go take a look at Giant brand bikes. I recently helped a friend buy one that was pretty nice. came out to about 1300cnd...so that should be about rite w/ your 900US range. Very nice bike...it was an XTC2 hardtail. weighed just a bit under 25lbs.

I just bought a brand new Giant XTC2 for $950, just came out a few weeks. Retail price is $1100
Its so new its not even on the Giant-bicycle website yet.
This bike is so damn good for the money its not even funny. It will kill any bike that cost 3-4 hundred dollars more. The frame is 2.9 pounds, with XTR parts. brand new 2003 minotou skarab fork.
Very fast, I have no problems keeping up with roadies
Oh did i mentions that it is also beautiful. Black with blue accents.
Don't take out words for it the Giant XTC2 is rated damn good. check mtbreview.com 4.8 out of 5 by dozens of users

johndoe--did you get the new 2003 model? I was quite impressed by what my friend's bike came with. The frame was excellent for how much it costed (better than some 'team issue' frames out there) and it had solid components all around, not just an XTR rr derailleur and some cheesy cassette and bb or something like that. I find that a lot of companies do that these days...dump a lot of money into having an XTR rear D and then have Deore shifters or cranks and stuff...i guess it suckers the people who don't know what to look for in a bike..:confused:

yes the XTC2 i bough about a month ago is a 2003 model.
When i went to buy the bike it wasn't even out yet. But the LBS had the 2003 catalog. Looked at it, looked at the specs and was WOW. Had them order for me pronto.
Long story short i am problaby the 1st one to have that bike.
Best bike availible sub $1000 by far.
