Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Grips over cables

Hey all,

Has anyone slid a grip over a brake cable? I would like to have some mountain bike grips, oury's for example, near the stem on my bullhorns since I usually ride up there, but I am not sure if I'll be able to get one to slide over the cable.

Shouldn't be a problem, just use some rubbing alcohol to lube things up.

I think you misunderstood me.

I have bullhorns (the nashbar ones to be specifc) and want to put grips near the stem with the brake cable routed under the grip. I'm wonderin' if anyone has successfully done this.

Or cut a slit out of the grips for the cable and gorilla glue the grips on. That way you don't have to jam them on. much easier.

ok, i did i was just trying to get a picture (or some reference to your current setup) to try to envision how much cable you have to work with and the chance of a pinch or kink being an issue...on to look at nashbar bars...

Yeah, this occured to me. I'm just afraid that it won't be all-weather proof. It also seems like a very unelegant solution. I probably shouldn't care about that though, looking at my bike.

ok, i think you should be fine. reglue as needed if youre going to go that route.

you're going to have to mount the grips before the brakes.
and slide the houseing under the grip.

that doesn't sound like too much fun.

Not only does it not sound like fun, it doesn't sound possible to shove the housing through after the grip is mounted.

It might work doing it this way:
Put the grip on the bar first, without the cable under it.
Work a screwdriver under the grip all of the way working from the opposite end the cable needs to start at.
While pushing the cable in one side, pull the screwdriver out the other.

The screwdriver basically lifts the grip up to create a tunnel for the cable to pass through. You'll definately have to lube everything up with some rubbing alcohol, maybe even WD-40.

Warning, I have no idea if this will work or not, just a theory.

It should be possible to shove the cable through after the grip is mounted. Just use plenty of wd40 and get the grip loose on the bar first. Probably best to choose a nice stretchy grip and avoid the duel compound type that have a harder core and soft outer.

I don't know how well it will stand up to rain. There will be air gaps around the cable which could allow water to get between the bar and grip.

lots of hairspray for lube ... when it drys it holds the grip in place. Oury grips are fairly soft and flexible so lube the crap out of the grip slide it to where you want it, lube up the housing with the HP and jam it through then rinse the excess HP off the grip and you should be all set. Water could be an issue, it might break down the HP over time which coould cause the grip to move around a little ... run the cable on the back side and you should be all set. note: use lots of hairspray it get tacky quick.

if you feel like using a walnut to crack a sledgehammer:

get a metal skewer and heat it over a gas flame.
them press it on the inside of the grip [but not too hard] so that the grip melts and you get a semi-circular indentation on the inside edge of it.

or: put the grips in the oven at about 50degrees C [until they're just a little pliable. not melty].

don't blame me if you fu<k it up though. rubbing alcohol and hairspray sounds like a much better idea.

Umm. I have done this. It is not complicated. Just requires a little bit of elbow grease. I used windex (or the generic equivalent thereof, rather). Lots of windex. it worked great. A twisty motion will serve you well, too. (PS- done with Oury grips over a break cable on track drops.. you can do it!)
