Holy Shnitzle....would you guys just give me an answer
Ok, anyone ever used an SPL meter to measure the sound of different freewheels? We'd like a standardized reading at 1 metre, please. Thank you.
There, the responses should come flooding in now.

You know, I don't think we should. I think you should stop being so demanding and stop expecting people on these forums to reply to your question faster that they could even type an answer. (Obviously that was an over-exaduration, but you get the point) Who says anybody on here even has an answer to such a pointless question. I really don't think anyone cares how loud ither freewheel is besides you. If you are really that desperate to find out then go to your LBS and ask. I acctually dout they would care enough about it to be able to answer this question ither though. Your best bet is to find someone that has each one and ride their bike. But what im wondering is why does it matter anyway?
A bit of respect for Fuzzy. :D

so. nobody will answer my question because they think it is stupid to care about having a loud or quit freewheel...ok well at least i have compassion enough to answer somebody's question. like when one of the guys asked something about what is hard about building a BMX bike?.....sorta a dumb question...i mean i guess he could have found someone at his local bike shop and asked him....or could have found different guys with different gear ratios on their bikes and rode their bikes..but no...he decided(which you must agree was alot easier) to ask us. SO i answered him...i didn't say....go find a person in your own area...or why don't you go get a book about BMX building...i simply offered my help....so i ask you the same kind of question...which freewheel is louder...and you guys start talking about taping playing cards to your frame....now who's the idiot///? neither of us....we both got over worked...lol...whatever that meant....just (again) will you answer my question?

Once again, i highly dout anyone even knows the answer to which one is louder, and asking how hard it is to build a bmx bike and asking for some simple pointers is alot more of a sensible question then asking something completely pointless to the way your bike performs, or feels like how loud different freewheels are. Seriously, who cares!?
Go to Radio Shack and get an SPL meter. It measures sound pressure levels, in db. A standardized test would be a sample taken at 1 metre.
By the way, I got an email from someone who would know. But since you don't want to edit your derogatory comments, I see no reason to tell you. You've attempted to insult us, so we owe you nothing.

Hot damn, tantrum city. I almost forgot someone asked a question.
You can *make* any freewheel loud as hell by squirting a citrus degreaser into the mechanism. Actual max attainable volume is determined not only by the number of pawls (and since I haven't popped either open to count I don't know) but number of teeth and also pawl spring strength, the latter of which will vary from unit to unit and change over time.
OK. I just cleaned a whole bunch of personal attacks out of this thread. Keep it clean from now on. Thanks.

Wow, it's so much shorter now.
why do you need it so loud? beside the fact that you like it that way.

A freewheel being loud is about as pointless as one being silent.. and even there I could slightly understand why that matters to you.

If you want it quiet, pack the pawls with thick grease.
If you want it loud, run it dry.
That being said, my new Odyssey Cassette is ridiculously loud when freewheeling, but silent when I pedal. I can scare pedestrians just by riding up beside them and then coasting.

Heavy grease like Park Polylube isn't suitable for freewheel/freehub/cassette mechanisms...it's too thick and can cause the pawls to slip. Slick Honey is about the heaviest stuff you can put in there and still expect it to work properly, even that may be a little much. I tend to use stuff like Tenacious Oil or you can even just use lighter lubricants like T-9 or Tri-Flow in there if you want.

Yes, I should have put that caveat in my original post.
While it isn't advisable, it will make your freewheel quieter.
I've had no problems with ACS freewheels and general automotive bearing grease.
You should also consider the climate when choosing lubricant for the freewheel/cassette/freehub. In really cold weather even lighter stuff may freeze enough to result in slipping pawls.

That's because there IS no answer to your question. How loud your freewheel is depends more on how much stuff is packed into it than which MODEL it is.
How long is a piece of string?

Now that my friends is a brilliant question
It's twice as long as 1/2 it's length, but I'd like a more specific answer, ok. And you guys are all ****ing *** ***** if you can't answer my ****** question. ****ers. :D
