In the winter I've been riding a fixed-gear bike for a change, It has a front brake with a 50/16 ratio. Tonight I installed a 16 tooth ss freewheel and a rear brake as a bail-out for the ride home after riding fixed for too long. Question is should I have gone down a tooth or so since now I'll have the luxury of coasting? or stay with the 16? ;) Oh yeah the hub is a flip-flop style

Good question. I ride 52 up front with 17 on both sides of my flip-flop hub. That's about the same ratio as on your bike. This gear ratio is considered quite high by most fixed gear folks and running the 16 tooth gear on the freewheel side would be even higher. I guess it depends on your strength and conditioning and on how many hills you have to negotiate.
