I`m a noob. If I change my crankset from an Alivio with climbing channels(correct term?) to a Sugino without those pins and channels, will I need to change the frt der to something different to help it climb?

The front derailleur shouldn't make a difference. You will probably just need to get used to not front shifting under heavy load, since that will not "take" as well with the Sugino.
