And I really need to remember my clear ones! I have training classes on Wednesday nights and it's dark by the time I get out now. Anyway I remembered my lights, but forgot to bring my clear glasses. The bugs were so bad that I didn't want to ride without eye protection, so I just left the sunglasses on. Man it's dark like that!!!

Truly...I went in for a second pair that I keep the clear lenses in. I just switch out the pairs from my backpack for each leg of my commute.

I have a nice pair of sun glasses for my ride home (and other non commuting rides) and I have a $7 pair of clear saftey glasses for my morning (4:00 am) ride to work. I keep the pair I'm not wearing in a little polar tech pouch to keep them from scratching.
I also bought a second pair of saftey glasses and pulled off the nose piece and glued on the nose cover piece of an old discarded diving mask. When the temperature in the morning dips below 15 degrees I put in the nose piece with the nose cover, that way I can still blow my nose on the go and my nose doesn't freeze from exposure to the wind.

I prefer to use the amber lenses from my interchangeable Performance brand sunglasses this time of year. I'm too lazy to bring the extra lenses with me. They let you see well enough in the dark, and they provide some protection from the sun. They are a good compromise.

Too bad you don't need corrective lenses,

being myopic give me an excuse to buy prescription sunglasses and stylish sport glasses under the guise of safety.

I think I have over half a dozen prescription Rayban and Julbo glasses in all sorts of lens tints - clear, smoke, rose, yellow, vermillion, dark, mirrored mountain, and I migh be forgetting a couple.

I usually wind up bringing two pair, a pair on face, one darker or lighter depending on conditions. Like gear, but mine are perscription.

Too bad you don't need corrective lenses,

That doesn't make any sense.
All that means is that you have to spend 5x as much on each pair of sunglasses.

I wear corrective lenses but i make sure I wear my contacts when i ride so i don't have to deal with prescription lenses. And if I break my sunglasses it's no big loss.

I just wear clear safety glasses (free) all the time.

Sunglasses to drive only , if ...

'too bad...' was meant to be a bit sarcastic.

I'm too dumb to use contacts. I need my corrective lenses to be bigger than a fingernail.

It makes perfect sense. Not all of us can wear contacts. Some of the reasons are physical and some of them are work related. I can't wear contacts because I work in a chemical lab using solvents so I have never had them. It just doesn't make sense to get contact to wear for 2 hours in the morning before work and for 4 or 5 hours in the evening after work. Prescriptions sunglasses are cheaper in the long run for me.

At night the colored lenses increase the contrast too much for my tastes. They may make yellows brighter but they also make dark colors much darker. I find it had to distinguish holes from just dark spots on the pavement or off-road when using yellow or vermillion lenses.

Reminds me of a Jim Jarmusch movie, Night on Earth. Roberto Benigni plays an taxi driver in Rome. When his customer asks him why he's wearing sunglasses at night, Benigni says, "I was wondering why it was so dark! I've been wearing them all day and forgot about them!" Then he tells a bawdy story about a sheep he was in love with to his customer, a Catholic bishop.

I never almost use the dark lens myself. Amber during the day. I switched to the clear lens full-time for commuting maybe a month ago (go in early, leave late <sigh>). I just got a new pair which I think has a hardcase for the lenses so when the time comes for switching from morning to evening I'll be ready. :)

Haha! This is so great I was just listening to Cory Hart's tune "I Wear My Sunglasses At Night" and then see this thread....

I've also ridden with sunglasses at night. Not too bad, you see lights at reference points and so on. But for sure it's not safe.

I ride with a slightly bronze tinted glass to keep bugs out and I actually like the tint at night.

But the rest of you should try walking around at night with no moon and little street lights with your darkest glasses on for about 1/2 hour, then take them off in a very dark area; you'll be surprised as to how well you will be able to see in the dark for about 5 minutes or so. Another trick for late night when the lights are off in the house and you need to get up and turn a light on to see then when you turn the light off you can't see where your going; next time keep one eye closed the whole time your using a light then when you turn the light off open the closed eye...guess what? Now you can see where your going in a dark house with the one eye while the other is light blinded. You can swap between the two to see the radical difference.

I have a light smoke pair that I usually wear at night but being feeble minded I don't always remember them.

Often people forget stuff like street clothes to change into. Most I ever forgot clothes wise, was underwear . But, glasses. Took in my Rx sunglasses once. Forgot to take in the clear lenses for night riding. So when I got to work I only had dark lenses for my Rx. Working at night, did not need sunglasses. So I Scotch taped my Rx inserts to my head. Looked really weird. But, got me through the night.

I have a pair of those sunglasses that change with the amount of sunlight. They don't get as dark as I would prefer. But they get light very quickly when entering darker areas like pedestrian tunnels, which is where I have the biggest issue with dark this time of year. Performance had them on sale for $15 or so this Spring and they have worked out quite well.

I wear prescription glasses. I've gone on rides that lasted longer than expected, and gotten caught out after dark with only my sunglasses. Pretty dumb. Now I try to remember to carry my clear glasses even when I'm absolutely certain I'll be home before sunset.

Clear lenses are a must when I buy cycling glasses. I look for clear, amber, and dark interchangeable lenses. Riding at night you need clear lenses.
