I need new break pads on Precious. I went to the LBS and they told me I had to replace not just the pad but also the metal part attached to the pad (unfortunately I don't know the name of that part). I have a sneaking suspicion though that I can just replace the pad itself since they have little screws in the pads. I have Shimano 105 componets.

Can I just replace the pad (with no metal)?

You may be able to use these pad inserts with 105, but I'm not positive about it.

go here to sheldonbrown (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/brakeshoes.html) and scroll down to Dura Ace/Ultegra Kool Stop pad replacements or Dura "Holder Kit" which is the whole pad and holder assembly. Kool Stop is a better compound than the stock Shimano stuff.

Thank for more info. Did not realize I had posted this twice. Oops. Got good responses on both.
