I sent this to my sister with her big ass h2 and her husband who owns usually whatever big extended cab Z chevy truck thats out.

The rest of the world enourages small cars and we encourage large pos'. We should do like other countries and tax people based on motor size, etc.

Good to know that half the neighborhood here where I live are breaking the law.

There's also a law that 8000lb+ vehicles are considered commercial-vehicles and are allowed a much larger business-expense deduction too... talk about encouraging waste!!!

They couldn't be ticketed for violating the first sign, since it only lists weight. The second sign is specific enough to ticket them.
If you don't like them in your area, I wonder if you could start making reports on them. Give the plate number and watch the police scratching their heads when they show up. :D

Thats a great article!! I think that the tax loophole for vehicles over 6000 pounds is complete idiocy and pretty much passes on the cost to the rest of society that care enough about the environment and safety to not drive an SUV (there are definitely people who need SUV's but the large majority I see do not) and the fact that just recently upped the amount that is tax deductible from $25,000 to $100,000 just boggles my mind.

Will never happen. First the auto makers will challenge the laws. Then people who are wealthy and drive these things will throw money at it to make it go away.

I will predict that I will die before I am 50, either on a bike or in a car, since I drive small cars. I will die by an SUV, and have an over 50% chance that it will be by a woman. Not sexist, just a fact.

Why people can drive an auto or stick from a tiny hatchback to a 10000 pound SUV on the same license boggles me. How many SUV's have you seen with rear damage due to them backing up? I see a lot in Los Angeles. Even more, why do we allow teenage driver behind the wheel of a 10000 pound killer?

what's so bizarre about these idiots that claim to be for america seem to care nothing about it's independence and prowess... how can we be so weak at producing energy but so strong at consuming it? we'll end up like some fat bastard lord that's slowly losing all his surfs to his eating habits! do they not care about this country at all? we should be the leader in inovative energy technologies... they're the most important technologies to any civilization! what are we gonna do without energy? sit around scratching our asses?! there's such an opportunity in being the best energy producer.. can you imagine the revenue?! but nooooo... we lub oil... uh huh... we lub it... we lub it good... we lub it so much we just sit here on our asses not innovating...

I don't really care cause I know if I had the money I'd buy the biggest most pollutioninest truck I can and drive it daily. And when people criticize me for it, I'll be like, "why do YOU have an SUV for your ****** then?"

Here's the deal: Say the City decides that it's only going to ticket commercial trucks over 6000 pounds, and that they didn't intend to prohibit SUVs. The first truck that gets ticketed can fight this and win, because they can't say some 6000 pound vehicles are prohibited, and some aren't, and the police are free to discriminate between classes of drivers.

The weight limits will either be tossed out, or enforced fairly. Maybe they can get away with rewriting the law to apply to commercial vehicles, but then the question is "what is commercial?" Does that include the guy who gets a tax writeoff for his vehicle by putting his business sign on his SUV? That's what I would argue as a ticketed commercial vehicle.

Bottom line: The City can't discriminate between classes of drivers in their enforcement. This will be interesting.

I know the 6000 pound laws are for safety, but I wonder if they are posted because of harm to the road at those weights. If so, whether its a work vehicle or not shouldn't allow them on the roads posted.

The heavier the vehicle, the more damage it causes to the road.

Fair enough. I really couldn't be bothered to give it that much thought. I was picturing the little street near my house that barely has room for 2 cars to pass each other.

I wonder if metro Atlanta has similar weight restrictions that AREN'T being enforced?

One interesting implication is liability for crashes. Usually, you are automatically liable if your law violation causes an injury. If the extra weight of an SUV increases the severity of an accident, the driver might find himself or herself liable even if the other driver caused the accident.

Of course, this is just guesswork, but it's plausible guesswork.

I was in downtown Palo Alto last night and saw a huge SUV with anti-war stickers on it, good to know Palo Alto is still Palo Alto.......
