Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - The problem with Kierin grips - Windex - and water...

I was putting my new grips on my 123s 2 nights ago. I was trying to do it with hot water as a lubricant because i had it handy and i got the grips on about half way where they decided to stop. Try as i might they wouldn't budge. I remembered something about people here using windex to get them on and off so i thought, why the hell not? I sprayed it on and whatnot, put my hand on the grip twisted it and it sent a searing pain into my palm of the likes of which i had not felt since i cut my hand trimming the fat off the prosciutto at my college job and was cleaning the windows later that night. Sure enough, all my attempts at using only hotwater resulted in me removing some skin from little points on my palm. Nothing serious or even noticable at a glance but windex doesn't care.

Long story short, i got those grips on rather quickly with windex. But if you're going to apply grips with windex, let me go ahead and suggest starting with windex and checking you hands before you cover them in ammonia.

I just put some Oury grips on some cut down risers with a little bit of soapy water as I couldn't find the Windex at work. Maybe it's a good thing I didn't find it eh?

Next time use WD-40. It is one of the 'good' uses of WD-40 on a bike.

Okay - I did this the other day and it's worked far better than anything I've done before. cut 1 set of Champ Kierin grips to about 2/3 their original size - i wanted these on top, next to the stem. Then I had another pair for the drops for when I'm trackin' it up.

I got all 4 on in way under 5 minutes.

Here's what you do

Throw the grips in boiling water for about 5 minutes. Take them out with a pair of tongs or something. shake off the excess water and spray a bunch of hairspray up inside the grips, coating them. Spray a bit of hairspray on the bars for good measure.
Slide them bastards on, easy as pie. The hot water makes them more pliable, and the hairspray makes them slipery.

Once they were on, it took about 5 hours and then they woudn't budge.

Boil them my friend, boil them.

Rubbing alcohol is the only way to go, in my mind.
Why? Soapy water will get soapy again in rain, and your grips will slip.
The reason windex was suggested (i don't like that idea either) is because of the alcohol content.
Alcohol will lubricate like water, and then evaporate.
Perfect!

I've used it on champs and strong G grips regularly. It works.

Rubber cement! Keirn builders and racers use rubber cement. it is easy and fast. the glue expands the grips and little is used .

hairspray worked fine for me the other night without boiling any water.

I've done it with just hairspray but boiling them just made it that much easier.

Marcus over at yojimbos (http://www.yojimbosgarage.com) has the Kierin rubber cement. I wanna get some o' that

I use an air compressor. The blast of air expands the grips and allows you to move 'em over the bars.

so does rubber cement and it cost about 99 cents and no heat,boiling,air, hair spray involved.

I had a tough time with the first one I forced on. I only sprayed hairspray on the bars.... tore a whole in my hand....

For the second one I sprayed the hairspray on the bars and soaked the inside of the grips too. That worked really well. If you put some gloves on like those cheap rubber on one side work gloves you'll get a much better grip on the damn grips. Gloves would probably help no matter what you used (WD-40/Hairspray/Rubber Cement)

funny thing, i'd heard rubbing alcohol was the key. got home late, didn't have any in the house. did have a big-ass bottle of vodka. poured a jigger into each grip thumb-closed it and shook it to coat the inside. they slid on just fine. rock solid in about half an hour as the booze dried/evaporated.

ed , i am giving a personal class to some guys here in NYC. I WILL COVER TUBULARS, GRIPS, CHAIN ,ETC. I will build the bike from scratch.

hairspray is the jam.

All of you people don't have a clue. I used some of my girlfriend and I's sex lube. They went on like butter. Go out and buy a bottle of KY or 'slippery stuff' (that's the brand) and keep it in your tool box....

Yeah i don't have most of the stuff you guys speak of just laying around. I was just making the point that windex hurts cuts real bad (thoguh i guess thats obvious and unnecessary).

But i do have a question that is not covered in those threads:
Teadogg you said you cut down the champs grips...
my 123s are cut off a little on the ends for more clearence. So the champs grips are a little long for my aesthetic tastes.
So the question is in two parts..
1) Does cutting the grips sacrifice the integrity of the grips? (like will they fall apart quicker?)
2) If the answer to 1 is no, do i have to remove the grips to cut or can i just exacto knife a section off?

Cutting them doesn't hurt the grips at all. an exacto knife works well. Just don’t cut too deep or you’ll scar the bars.

nice morning laugh...
i was at work and had to put on some soyo grips..looked around...nuthin.. then i remembered there was some of that hand sanitizer in the washroom. it's goopy so it doesn't drip off..lubed up the bar and the grip.. it went on pretty well and won't budge now.. plus my grips smell like aloe.
