Regarding my Motobecane...would any cylocross brake levers work?...I seem to remember hearing that the handlebars are the standard size on french bikes....just not sure if the size difference is large enough so that I'd have to get a certain size....

Take it to the bike shop and try 'em out. If they fit, you're good. If they're too big, you can use a shim of some sort. If you hate shims, measure your bars and keep looking.

cross levers are wonderfuly versatile. i have used them on MTB bars (smaller bar dia.) by putting one wrap of bar tape down first. i had no problems with braking.

A wild guess: display sizes/distances? Like it shows you what size your handlebar is, so you cen tell if you'll be able to use either a 24mm, or a 26mm clamp size cyclocross lever. If it's not bigger then 26-27 mm, you will. Just put a layer of innertube/duct tape/paper under it if you need to.
